Are we at the edge of nuclear war?
'I don't wanna think about it!'
No one seems to be talking about it, but the risk of a nuclear war is at the back of most of our minds. And when I say at the back, I mean buried really deep. Most of us have some basic understanding of what a nuclear attack could mean, and the idea is so terrifying - even unimaginable for a lot of us - it's pretty understandable that we may refuse to even think about it. But do we need to start getting more information? Or even survival supplies?
Let's have a look at the news
Although you won't see a major broadcast about this for the understandable reason of avoiding total panic, some news providers will casually share some information on the subject.
The Sun - UK
Yesterday the newspaper 'The Sun' published the article Here's everything you need to know if you want to live through a nuclear attack, arguing that 'there's no harm in being prepared for every eventuality'. Although they also mention that the event of a nuclear war is 'very unlikely', they give information on how to prepare, what to pack and which direction you need to run when the blast hits. They even tell us to look for libraries and read about rebuilding society.
Jerusalem online
Russian citizens warned to prepare for nuclear attack. In a less subtle manner, Russian citizens are also warned about the reality of the nuclear threat. A televised message was broadcast recommending that people locate the closest fallout shelter in case of emergency.
These are the latest news, although if you've been paying attention, there have been articles published daily on the subject.
-A few weeks ago Russia held a massive nuclear war exercise.
-Last week Putin withdrew from the Nuclear Security Pact, citing 'hostile action' by the US.
-A few days ago many papers speculated an upgraded DEFCON warning by the US military, although this information is highly classified.
You may have also repeatedly heard that the threat is even greater than it was during the Cold War. So even thought the media isn't focusing on this, and even though most of us refuse to think about it, the nuclear threat is real and terrifying. Starting to actually prepare for it will make it even more real, that's why we might be reserved to actually do it.
But even if you're not packing bags or storing water and canned food, take some time to read these articles and get some sort of idea how you can survive if you have a chance. But don't spend too much time thinking about it. There's a reason our minds are stirring away from this thought, as it can cause a great deal of stress and worry and that can't really help anyone.
