Why I will be fasting this Canadian thanksgiving; and why you should too

The Tradition of Thanks-giving is exactly as it sounds.

Or is it?

We would obviously assume - given the name of the holiday / tradition - that the holistic meaning is to "give thanks" for the many blessings of life in that moment.

A time of ceremonial appreciation.

Where we honor the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us...

Yet does this not only make sense in a world of scarcity?
A world where wars are fought for territory and possessions and the only ones with wealth are those who forcibly take it; leaving the common man with little more than lint-ridden pockets?

In this type of world, where surviving alone is an act of desperation, a great bounty or feast would be appreciated to the extent of knees being pressed to ground and hands shaking in prayer towards the sky.

However, in our current world (timeline), scarcity is a thing of the past.

Our current epidemic is not a lack of resources....it is an overwhelmingly toxic consumption of resources that are pulled from every crack and crevice in the earth that people trade for currency to attain a few fleeting decades of power.

In a world like this, stuffing our faces with copious amounts of food for the sake of it is a ridiculous notion.

How does stuffing ones face with more food than is needed show that we appreciate our current circumstance?

My understanding is that you cannot truly appreciate what you have not experienced the lack of.

When you experience the lack of something, you come to more fully appreciate its presence.

Its a pretty simple concept right?

so I don't understand how we can stuff our faces like this guy,

and still appreciate what we have too much of...

Is this practice not one of greed?

Where we consume more than is healthy, just because we can, and don't even offer that food to those around us, including those in poverty?

for these reasons, I will be fasting this Thanks-giving, as a way to appreciate and honor the existence of my abundance.

For only in its absence will I appreciate its presence :)
