Well, it's more of a belief than superstition, which is close but still, at least it's not "burn the cat :| "
Plus you are quite wrong and I have to say there is nothing about superstition here, I'm sure if you come against an evil spirit a cat will fight it off better than you since you can't punch air and all, but yes superstition gives some misconceptions and false beliefs.
It's still good to have different cultures giving their thoughts, where I live cats are stray animals better off than castrated dogs sure, but still treated like shit, unless of course, they aren't indoors. Where again castration awaits. :D
Maybe next time a cat can save you from that evil spirit that tugs your ears to go for that night run on booze :P , so you won't have to hide the next day or keep those shit dependancies, jk jk
