Traditional Venezuelan Games

Below is a list of the games and toys that have amused Venezuelans over the years.
The perinola

This toy consists of two parts, a top or head and a bottom or base on which the first should fit. Both parts are joined by a string. Initially the perinola was constructed by hand with empty cans and sticks or carving the parts in wood, at the moment they are made with plastic.

The top

It has semi-circular turned shape and a metal tip. It is played by winding a string or guaral around and throwing it to the ground making it turn on its own axis. Artisan mind is made in wood or totuma, currently it is made of plastic.

The yo-yo

It consists of two circular parts joined in the middle by a small cylindrical wedge that keeps them separated at a short distance. In the wedge a string is rolled which allows the child to raise and lower it. Traditionally it was manufactured in wood, today it is made commercially with plastic.

The gurrufío

This toy consists of a circular sheet of wood, tin or plastic, in which two holes are made through which a cord or guaral is passed. The string is spun and then stretched causing it to wind up and unwind to make the spin disc.

Metras or chicks

They are balls of clay, wood, glass or porcelain that are rolled on the ground to hit them with each other. Sometimes they replaced by spherical seeds. There are many variations for this game.

The parrot

It was born thousands of years ago in Asian lands and arrived in Venezuela, like many other traditions, thanks to the Spanish colonizers. It consists of a light wood structure that is covered with tissue paper, a light fabric or plastic. He is tied a string and made to fly with the force of the wind. Sometimes a cloth tail is added that gives stability

Sack races
()
It is a race in which participants cover their legs with sacks that they must hold with their hands. To advance, it is only valid to jump, without releasing the bag. The first to reach the goal is the winner.

How to forget the hidden ones? Of course we know that football, baseball, tennis, basketball, etc. But when you were a little of these you played?

Hello. As a child, I played all of them. Happy moments. Now I`m promoting Venezuelan stick fighting. It is a tradition, but for adults and young adults. Our own method of fighting. It is not easy to spread the word. Today, a lot of young people are interested in other traditions rather than to know ours.
Thank you for your post.
