The Diverse & Beautiful Culture Of Bali
Bali is often dubbed the "Island of the gods".
The culture of Bali is very diverse so I will only cover some of the popular practices you can still see today.
Most know Bali for it's diverse art forms.
These include:
The Day Of Silence
For Hindu New Year, once a year in Bali, there is a day of silence, Nyepi. During Nyepi, everyone remains in their homes and takes time to contemplate. Tourists are discouraged from leaving their hotels.
The day before new year is when it gets interesting, immense, colorful depictions of monsters (Ogoh-Ogoh) are paraded around the village.
At the end of the evening the Ogoh-Ogoh are burnt to discourage evil spirits.
Cremation Ceremony
Once the day comes, the deceased person is situated inside a highly decorated tower. the multiple tiered tower is representing the Hindu universe.
At midday the tower is carried from the family's home to a cremation ground. Offerings are placed at the site of cremation to urge God to cleanse the spirit so the reincarnation will come back to this world in purer form
Once the body is put into a wooden bull statue it goes up in flames.
The ashes are poured into the ocean and you are now ready to enter the ethereal world.
