Chron Goes On Holiday #4: The Gili Islands & The Peacefulness Of Them
I had a great time on the islands of paradise we call the Gilis here in Indonesia. I am staying on Gili Air (bottom of post contains map).
The island has no gas-powered vehicles, only horse carriages, bicycles and electric motorcycles.
This gives the 3 islands of the Gilis an ideal place to relax and write Steemit posts!
Else than partying (which is what has been occupying most of my time) you can also go for a snorkelling/diving trip.
The island can be walked around in about 1 hour so finding activities to occupy your time will happen quite quickly just by walking around.
This is the first time I have gone to Gili Air in 7 months, since then, they have constructed these swings in the ocean at multiple locations. It is especially awesome during sunrise/sunset!
The following is a list of popular activities to participate in on the Gilis according to WikiTravel:
Party boats
It is very easy to rent a boat, captain and crew on the Gilis. I had the chance to participate in this during my trip.
15 of my friends and I got to cruise around the Gili islands during the sunset and it was amazing!
Freediving
Recently opened, the Freediving and Apnea centre has established itself on Gili Trawangan. You can attend courses and workshops there. The centre is owned by freedive record holder Mike Board.
You can also freedive on the other islands, Gili Air and Gili Meno.
Yoga
Yoga classes are everywhere! The main center is on Gili Trawangan, named Gili Yoga. Truly a peaceful place to practice your yoga!
Snorkelling
Masks and fins are available all over the beaches and can be acquired from the numerous dive shops. The snorkeling program (when you hop on a boat) usually departs at 10AM and returns at 4PM. This will include visits to at least 3 snorkeling spots around the islands.
The cost ranges from Rp 60,000 to 150,000 depending on the shop and your negotiating skills. LINK
You can snorkel off most beaches, however be mindful of the strength of the current you are snorkeling in. Wear diving slippers no matter how well of a swimmer you are.
Relax
The Gilis offer the great service of allowing you to do nothing. There are no cars on any of the islands and there are many bungalow style accommodations with great verandas that overlook gardens or the ocean. The cafes almost always have small open huts (called berugak) which are perfect for two to four people to relax in for a good chunk of the day.
Beaches surround the islands. Most islands have the best beaches on the east side in regards to accessibility.
Walk
You can walk around all three islands in about 90 minutes. Just follow the coastline and wear sunscreen!
In Conclusion: The Gilis Are Awesome!
I have been to the Gilis 6 times already and always thoroughly enjoy my experience there. I highly recommend the islands as an escape from the heavy screen use that us Steemians experience most of the time.
