The Bet You Must Never Make - Daily Meditation #12
I am an advocate of degenerate-level gambling. Not in the casino, but in life. Risk is your best friend, so long as bankruptcy, broken bones, and blunt force head trauma are not likely outcomes. With risk comes reward, so you must learn to embrace risk. Flourishing, growing, and loving, go hand-in-hand with risk. Take all the bets you can, and wager your ego against what the world has to offer.
However, there is one bet you must never take. It is the bet that feels safe. It is the bet that reeks of reason. It is the bet that cowards take, and the bet that society pats you on the back for.
You must never bet against yourself.
We bet against ourselves when we say yes to a job that doesn't pay what we deserve. We bet against ourselves when we beg a lover not to leave us. We bet against ourselves when we refuse to share our art with the world. These are the bets that deny our self-worth and value to others.
You may be the lame horse in the race, but it's your fucking race. And whether you like it or not, you have to run it. You might as well try to pull a Seabiscuit, and emerge an unlikely champion.
This is your life. You're stuck with yourself. Genius or imbicile, strong or weak, beautiful or ugly, you are the one that has to decide where you place your bets.
Go all-in on you.
A bet against yourself is a bet that you don't want to win.

So many of us do this. Why? Because we are taught to play it safe and not taught to live our lives the way we dam well please. Thanks for the reminder.
Yes. The social conditioning that we have ingrained in us is strong. Playing it safe is generally a disservice to ourselves.
And I think we intuitively know the difference between betting everything we have vs. taking healthy risks. I don't want people to be reckless, but I want them to believe in themselves enough to take many shots at what they want.
What if I bet against my negative emotions and thoughts? :deepthinking:

I think the reason why we need to bet on ourselves is that there isn't any other option. We think that we can play it safe, but that is really just selling ourselves short.
Yup, playing it safe isn't the winning formula in life. Playing to win is the only way we can ever win!
I always bet against myself because in that way I always have to pay myself a coffee lol....
