Story behind stamps (邮票背后的故事)

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Collecting stamps is a hobby from my childhood, so when I saw ‘First Day Covers’ in a Sunday market in Melbourne, I was more than surprised. It was an album of stamps about Australian history, which falls into my domain of interest. I missed out a stamps album about Europe a couple of weeks ago, which made me so regretful. So this time, I won’t miss it out, I decided to bid and possess it. After bargaining with the boss, I got it! A stamp is usually to memorize some important events or key persons in the history of human being, there are always an episode behind each of the stamp. It is a process of art enjoyment and knowledge obtain to investigate the story underneath. Please follow me to enjoy this process. ..

This is the second issue of stamps in the Australian Bicentennial collection honours the seventeenth century navigators who touched upon Australia’s shores. Their discoveries turned the existence of Terra Australia from conjecture to reality. Four of the best known are featured.

Willem Jansz, captain of the Dutch East India vessel Duyfken ,was the first European known to set foot on Australian soil. He explored Australian land twice and adventured western shore of Cape York in Queensland, near the town of Weipa. This is the first recorded European landfall on the Australian continent. Janszoon proceeded to chart some 320 km of the coastline, which he thought was a southerly extension of New Guinea. Finding the land swampy and the people inhospitable (ten of his men were killed on various shore expeditions), Janszoon decided to return at a place he named Cape Keerweer ("Turnabout"), south of Albatross Bay, and arrived back at Bantam in June 1606. He called the land he had discovered "Nieu Zeland", after the Dutch province of Zeeland, but the name was not adopted, and was later used by Abel Tasman for New Zealand.

Dirk hartog became the first to make contact with Australia’s western seaboard. He left a pewter plate nailed to a pole as proof of his visit. He made landfall at an island off the coast of Shark Bay, Western Australia, which is now called Dirk Hartog Island after him. His was the second recorded European expedition to land on the Australian continent, having been preceded by Willem Jansz in 1606, but the first to do so on the western coastline.

Abel Janszoon Tasman (Dutch: [ˈɑbəl ˈjɑnsoːn ˈtɑsmɑn]; 1603 – 10 October 1659) was a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant, best known for his voyages of 1642 and 1644 in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). He was the first known European explorer to reach the islands of Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) and New Zealand, and to sight the Fiji islands.

William Dampier: was a crew member aboard the pirate vessel Cygnet when he recorded the first British contact with the Australian coast in 1688. Dampier returned eleven year later as a captain of the Roebuck to chart a segment of the north-west shoreline.

亚伯•詹桑雄•塔斯曼 Abel Janszoon Tasman(荷兰语:[ɑbəljɑnsoːntɑsmɑn]; 1603年10月16日至10月10日)是荷兰海员,探险家和商人,以1642年和1644年为荷兰东印度公司(VOC)服务而闻名。
