Are You Open To Being Wrong?
Hey My J's,
Here I am, back with your daily dose of banter on the blockchain and today. My thought of today is about being wrong and being open to being wrong. If I look at interactions between people today online and offline its all such a power play.
So many unnecessary arguments fueled by knowing a few facts or half measured discussions and a whole lot of ego to fill in the gaps left by their reasoning. It's as if the ability to say you're wrong, acknowledge that you don't know everything or have all the facts is such a horrid thing people avoid it like the plague and argue to the bitter end.
Which is often to the determinant of the argument and those involved in it, it just seems to be like an insane amount of wasted energy and very little progress in the process.
Why is it so bad to not know
I'm not quite sure why people feel like their point of view must be correct even whenever day we see things change and what was once considered common knowledge changes. We're always learning new things and we by no means have all the answers. I've met plenty of people who think they've learned all they need to and are not open to a single new piece of information and while it's your choice I still feel it's bit naive.
I really couldn't understand why since it had very little to do with the level of intelligence people had, as these people ranged on the spectrum of intellect so it made it hard for me to understand why people feel this way.
A simple explanation would be to dismiss these people as stupid but perhaps it's not the level of intellect but the way we think.
I've been looking on and off at the Dunning-Kruger effect which psychologists call metacognition – thinking about thinking. This is a cognitive bias in which people mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. Plenty of people suffer from this bias even myself but I am aware to an extent of it and I try to reason with myself when I do catch myself falling victim to that train of thought.
The fool thinks himself to be wise, while a wise man knows himself to be a fool. - William Shakespeare
What I find funny is how this effect can be reinforced by society and even encouraging it. Organizations hire the most confident person during an interview, but it turns out that that person is also the least capable one.
Celebrities who think they’re smart to gain notoriety and the spotlight while scientists who made world-changing discoveries get no media attention.
Your friend who claims to be a good driver or a great chess player is usually the least skilled one.
The pressing question is: Why are the least competent people usually the most confident ones?
The least skilled person often overestimates their ability because they have no idea how much they don’t know. In other words, poor performers believe they know everything in a particular subject and therefore they tend to be overconfident about it.
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance. — Confucius
It’s also something that should give us all pause for thought. The effect might just explain this baffling self-belief of some of your friends and colleagues. As unlikely as you might think it is, you too could be walking around blissfully ignorant of your ignorance. This is the problem of the case with many not able to or cannot even fathom to think about the way they think and if they can see the flaws in how they think.
Have your say
What do you good people of steem think? Are you open to being wrong? Do you often re-evaluate
your stances on things? Do you accept other opinions if not right away, eventually?
Holla at me in the comments! All my commenters I will now refer to as Jessie. Jessie is a good friend of mine, but Jessies got a girl, and I want to make her mine.

First, J thinks the ability to be in love with not knowing is an essential facet of the human condition which requires an immutable gratitude for the existence of such an intriguing environment to explore. While being well-enough equipped with the means to propel oneself off the know-ledge, many people are largely unaware a database of what has been, is, and will be is accessible.
Second, I'm pretty stoned, and getting all esotericy so I'll refrain from babbling on when "ancora imparo" (I am still learning) which is supposely something a, very knowledgeable man said on his death bed...
Third, (I got a third) in an age of information, perhaps not knowing stuff, no matter how trivial the stuff may be, is like a subliminal admission of status inferiority. Whereas before the printing press the masses had no contact with knowing a damn thing outside of their cultural and geographical constraints. Thus, being "well informed" on the current consensual views of reality and the discernment of its practicality was not a talent anyone had to learn to fake better than anyone else.
OK yea ima just leave it there and get an afternoon beer.
Thx for helping to get my gears grinding through the gunk again.
Damn son you are spitting flames from the pulpit today! 🔥🔥 I love that like being in love with not knowing!
I think that people don’t like uncertainty it makes them feel uncomfortable and in a bid to create some sort of feeling of control they close off their worlds and minds.
Yeah I think vanity or and this sort of online reputation management is driving this sort of competition if ideals!

Hello there! I know that truth is evasive and that one can never be a 100% sure of everything, especially because things change all the time. And we do as well )) The world is not frozen, everything flows, and what we think is absolute truth today can change tomorrow. Clinging on to something for dear life just because you don't want to let go out of stubbornness of "I am right!" is ridiculous. We have to be open to changes in order to grow.
On the other hand, accepting others' opinions blindly or just to please them or to avoid disagreements and fights is like giving in. It's not about who is better, it's about being as true as possible. If someone says something I disagree with, I will voice it, no matter if the person gets insulted by my disagreement. I have the right to NOT agree. The other person has the right to accept this difference and stay friends with me DESPITE our differences.
Both are excellent points yes there are a few truths we hold on to as our values but the rest we should not be completely tied to there’s so much more that we don’t know and you’ll be surprised who can teach you a lesson if you’re open to it!
following blindly is no way to grow up either you live in a safety net of having other people think for you and never formulating your own opinion! Critical thinking is so important for creating valuable discourse
I always encourage all types of points of view in my comments 😋 even if it’s disagreeing with me

Lol in that case, do you ever get tired of being right?

I guess a lot of it comes from childhood traumas. Some things simply trigger us because they remind us of something we couldn't take back then and never really processed. So, mostly it isn't about the topic itself, it's about an emotion it reminds us of. Well, that's my idea. I could be wrong, however. ;)
I never thought of that angle and it’s a pretty interesting and highly plausible reason for some of the online interactions we see today!
That could also play into why we always trying to curate our best selves online to show we have no regrets or rather portray that we doing our best
I think that being wrong is always seen as such a negative when it doesn’t have to be!
As a global community now we are able to explore so many points and ideas, the more we get wrong the quicker we can be pointed in the right direction! Failure is not final

I've been through it. I was such an Aries for the first half of my life. :D Still am Aries of course, but I came to a lot of balance, mostly through yoga and meditation. I could never be wrong before. In my personal case, it was because my mother always doubted my perception of everything. She never listened to me, didn't believe me …, so I turned into someone who was always expecting anybody to not take me seriously and I needed to fight this.
Today, I actually love being challenged and leaving my comfort zone. Like today, when you criticised my latest post, I agreed and now I am follwoing you and we're having a productive conversation. Nothing happens from being right. A lot could happen when you accept that you might have been wrong. ; )
I don’t know much about astrology but I can tell you I was exactly the same! Always super opinionated wanting to dominate and force my opinion on others, always wanting to be right be it aggressively or passive aggressively and it was very rarely that I would accept others opinions.
But lessons in life have humbled me, my thirst for knowledge has helped and I’m trying to open my mind up to new ideas, opinions and points of view! It’s not easy lol i am still very much calibrating my filters but I can say I’ve come a long way when I think of the person I used to be.
Seems we are kindred spirits I’m also looking to leave my comfort zone more and more, I realize it’s good for me and yes indeed! When you stay open you never know where it might lead and I’m sure we will get along famously!
I’ll be sure to make appearances on your blog regularly going forward 🔥

happy to have you!
Ignorance is often bold!
The best thing is to know and recognize how much we don't know and always be willing to learn in order to avoid making mistakes.
Socrates used to say: All I know is that I don't know anything!
Thank you for your publication @chekohler
Indeed it’s a humbling thought when you realize how much you don’t know and if you’re open to learning about things you’ll be surprised where your interests can take you
Too many people just want to learn enough to get by and don’t really have a hunger to knowledge!

Fear of the unknown is powerful, and too many people do not confront this fear in themselves.
I think a great deal of evil and unintended consequences comes from people who fear the unknown and fear what they cannot control. Which, let's face it, is far more things than that which you can know and can control.

Wow I can't believe I missed this comment, I feel so bad now lol. I was using this post to reference my new post. If you are around comment on my next one so i can upvote you.
Oh I agree with you totally with you in many cases people spend so much time and energy trying to avoid the problem that they cause exponentially larger ones. I think theres a misconception that fear goes away, but its those who live with fear and dont let it deter them that are fearless, it never goes away we all feel it, some of us just choose to act anyway
Hah! We all miss comments sometimes, thanks for noticing though. See you on your next post!
