His most famous prose work is Breakfast-Table, which started with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858). He is recognized as an important medicine reformer. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Holmes was educated at Phillips Academy and Harvard College. After graduating from Harvard in 1829, he studied law before returning to medicine. He started writing early. One of his most famous works is "Old Ironsides", which was published in 1830. During his time as a teacher, he became an advocate of various reforms. He postulated the controversial idea that doctors were able to take puerperal fever from patient to patient. When Holmes retired from Harvard University in 1882 he continued to write poetry, novels and essays, until his death in 1894.
