I would suggest iron-nickel batteries for a home off grid system.
Their only down side is weight, and since you are not moving them, they are cheaper, longer lasting, more robust, more bullet proof and larger.

Next would be lead acid batteries because they are cheap and readily available everywhere. Plus you just place extra banks of batteries to charge over with a diode. So that once one bank gets full, it starts charging the next bank. (The diode drops 0.7 volts, so its like a little dam, that keeps the energy in the first area, until it get full.)

The industry is moving towards lithium ion for a reason, tesla doesn't built powerwalls out of those. We don't want giant batteries if we don't have to have them and there are a lot of advantages to these batteries over the older technology.

That and it's easy to recycle laptop batteries and is totally possible to build battery banks for free.
