Our leap month February, enjoy this extra day !

The month is almost over. But Why is February the leap month? This year we have another February 29th. In addition, why do we have to wait another four years for a leap day? And why is it always in the month of February?
The 365.25 days of our year cannot be fairly distributed over 12 months. With 7 months of 31 days, 4 months of 30 days and 1 day of 28 days you end up with 365. That means that we have 0.25 days left every year. We add this every four years to 1 extra day on 29 February. But why do we do that in the second month, why do we have February 29 as an extra day and not, for example, December 32?
The Egyptians announced how long a year lasted. For a long time, the precise length of the earth's orbit around the sun was unknown. Nevertheless, the Egyptians already had a reasonable estimate of how long a year should last. Based on the cycle of star Sirius, they found that a year had 365 days. The cycle of the moon was used to determine the amount of months per year.
In one year, the moon completed just over 12 cycles (of 29 or 30 days). The calendar therefore consists of twelve months of 30 days and five separate days at the end of the year.
January was not the first month The Egyptian year began in mid-July, when the Sirius star rose to the east in the morning. Often that coincided with the flooding of the Nile. This was a symbol for a new beginning. Especially for agriculture, because after the flood there was a fertile layer of sludge on which new crops could grow.
The calendar year turned out to be shorter than the solar year. One problem: this Egyptian calendar was shorter than the regulated solar year and the months shifted slightly with regard to the seasons each year. Around 2150 BC, on the basis of the sun, the Egyptians were able to determine more precisely how long a year lasts: 365.25 days. They therefore decided that an extra day should be added to the 365-day calendar year every four years.
The Romans placed the leap day in February. The Romans took that 12-month arrangement with an extra day every four years from the Egyptians. Their months alternated between 30 and 31 days, so that the five extra days of the Egyptians expired. We took this classification from the Romans again.
At least, broadly speaking. Because there are also differences. The year began in Roman times in the spring, because agriculture and wars could get going again. March was therefore the first month of a Roman year and February the last. The Romans added the extra leap day at the end of the year, in February. And to keep the overview, they decided to do this in the years that were divisible by four. We also still use this system.
This information was an idea from an stocker I read in the Dutch Quest. And research online. It’s something we all know exists but the how and why we don’t know. Well that changed today with writing this article.

Me neither it’s kinda fascinating and there are people that have that birthday date to and the are counted every 4 years seems to get them in trouble sometimes with documents and stuff. I had a laugh about it and saw this
