How Perfectionism Keeps Your Life From Being Real

in #life3 years ago

One of the most difficult things to overcome in life is perfectionism. If you think you're perfect, you're wrong. "Perfect" doesn't have to be a word that encodes negativity. When you have this attitude towards yourself, you'll always find your life is more stressful than it could be, and that's a recipe for unhappiness.

For those of you who don't understand what perfectionism is, it basically boils down to this: You want everything to be perfect. You want to be happy, to be successful, to have a great family, etc. All of these things are possible; however, if you have a strong sense of dissatisfaction with how things are right now, you'll never find true happiness. The reason this holds true even for the best things in life is because perfectionism blinds you to all of the possibilities. When you focus on only one aspect of your life, you'll only focus on that aspect and that's what becomes real.

When you want something bad enough, you can easily turn it into an unattainable goal. Whether it's not having the perfect car, not sleeping with your significant other, or not following your doctor's orders, there will always be things in your life that will keep you from achieving your dreams. There is no such thing as "perfect". What's perfect to one person is complete to another. The only fact that is constant is that everyone wants to achieve something that they have always wanted but never been able to.

This may sound mean spirited and unfair, but it's the truth. When you want something bad enough, you can do anything to achieve it. Now I know this sounds harsh, but there is nothing in life that is worth doing until it's done. This applies to everything, not just perfections. We've all set goals that we have failed to reach.

The problem with perfectionism is that it prevents you from being happy. The more obsessed you are, the more you push something away. It becomes an obsession that causes you to stress, worry, and even hate. When you have a perfect life, you're happy and fulfilled at all times. You wake up in the morning knowing that you have accomplished something, and that you have a positive outlook on life.

I'm not saying that you should live a life of perfect holiness. There will always be things that are out of place. But you can choose not to let perfection rule your life. Instead of focusing on what's not right, turn it around by focusing on what is.
