Yellow Burmese Python at CrocWorld - KwaZulu Natal

in #life7 years ago

On our last holiday back to South Africa, we went to CrocWorld, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal near Scottburgh. Previously a commercial crocodile farm, CrocWorld is now a conservation center, and conducts educational talks on snakes, crocodiles, and other reptiles, both onsite, and at schools around the region. We were lucky enough that on the day we went they had snake show, and with there not being many people there, the show was conducted in the open area, rather than the inside enclosure.

The star of the show that day was a yellow Burmese python named Monty, which had been confiscated from its owner, and was now living at the park. An interesting fact about yellow Burmese pythons, is that they're technically not albinos, but have what is called amelanism, or lack of pigment. They still have yellow and red pigment, and only lack their black pigment.

He was a big boy. We got to know him pretty well, and to feel just how heavy and strong he was.

He was more interested in heading for the trees.

Some of us weren't all that keen on him either...

We had a great day at CrocWorld. If you're in the Scottburgh area and have a ferw hours to spare, go and take a walk around Crocworld. If you're lucky, you could meet up with Monty too!!

Snakes freak me out bru! Being from Australia you'd think I'd get used to them as we have a lot of them, and some of the worlds' most venomous as well. But no, they creep me out! I stepped on a King Brown once. It was in a hole. I was it was pretty freaky and I have the shivers for a couple of months after. I might do a blog about it if I can find the courage.

Good post @bmj

I recon I'd be the same with the snakes here in Australia out in the wild. A healthy respect is definately required, but spiders probanly freak me out more than snakes . This python wasn't bothered at all by us, so it was nice to be able to get up close, especially for the kids. I quite enjoyed it too.

That snake is awesome. My friend has/had a Burmese, but it had normal colorations. His was so "gentle" I could see how he saw it as a pet. It would squeeze you, but I never saw the snake he had try and bite him once and would hang out with us hanging out in his room all the time.

Yeah it was a really nice snake, and so strong!! We were quite happy to leave him there though...
