Araluen Botanical Gardens - Tulips - Western Australia
In the leafy suburb of Roleystone, in the Perth Hills, Western Australia, you will find a little piece of paradise called Araluen Botanic Park, the hallmark of these gardens being the tulips which come into bloom each spring.
A Brief History
In 1929, Australian businessman, J.J Simons, established a holiday camp for the Young Australia League, of which he was the founder.
He decided on 59 hectares of the deep valley in Roleystone to be the perfect site for his camp, with streams running through the valley making it a pefect cool and moinst climate in which to build his dream garden. He named his valley Araluen, which is an Eastern States Aborignal word meaning "singing waters" or "place of lilies."
In 1990 the State Government purchased the the park, and has been managing the park, with the Araluen Botanic Park Foundation taking care of the 14 hectares of developed garden, with the mission of it becoming a Botanic Garden of Excellence.
The grounds are immaculately kept, with sweeping lawns, and colorful flowers to be found everywhere.
The Grove Of The Unforgotten
The Grove of the Unforgotten was built in memory of 88 Young Australia League members killed in World War I. The Grove is a series of terraces descending a steep slope, with waterfalls descending the terraces, and into a pool of reflection at the bottom.
The park is teeming with flowers at this time of year, and wherever you look you will find tulips, and all sorts of other colorful plants.
It was such a privilege to be able to visit such a beautiful place and spend some time with my family outdoors. We don;t do this kind of thing nearly enough, so maybe this will be the start.
