Pursuit of Happiness.

Be different
Be niiiiice
Just Smile
I promise it'll change your life

I couldn't stop singing, I was suffering from the deadly "endless looposis songitis in the capitis". It started getting annoying when the constant repetition started making me think about the lyrics. There was something very off-putting about the song, and it wasn't the fact that Black Eyed Peas is now just Will.I.Am signed under a different record label.

We live in a world that is built around convenience. Earth is now at it's most advanced stage. There wasn't a time in history when people had more options, advantages, accessories, technology or even rights than that they have now.
So, how is it that we live in a time where we have to make billboard hit songs to remind people just to be nice and smile? How is it that everyone, today, is either sad or mad?

Happiness is an inherent right of a human being, pursuit of happiness is even a constitutional right in the States. And that is where my light bulb glows.

Happiness and the pursuit of happiness are very different things. It is almost as if the pursuit of happiness is a curse that the closer to happiness you get, the further you are catapulted from it.
Even though life has become better at every definitive stage and standard, it turns out more people are objectively sadder, hopeless and depressed. As life becomes more suitable for chasing happiness it has become easier to become unhappy.

Back in the day happiness was simple; a handmade crocheted TV top. Today, if you don't have the latest enriched black, OLED, 62", bendable TV that your coworker has been bragging about, you feel defeated. With advancement in standards, expectations have also grown. Even money can only do so much. Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you things that can make you feel content for a short amount of time.
In fact, money has become one of the leading causes for the decline in happiness levels. As people get richer, they get unhappy due to unhealthy social comparisons. If you are poor, you will be unhappy for similar unhealthy social comparisons.

Unhealthy social comparisons don't end there. Internet has brought us closer than ever. It has made the world a smaller and a more well connected place. Social media, however, has also become a toxic, unhealthy part of our lives.
We now live in a world filled with unrealistic body expectations, numbers and likes have become the defining factor of how successful we feel, and it has taken out face to face interaction which is key to mental health.

The industrialization and mass production of bread played a major role in slashing a significant part of mass hunger. The same idea and technology has also led to industrializing and mass producing almost everything. The problem with that is most, if not all, industries want to cut down costs and production time. Leading to a heightened use of inorganic substances and chemicals. These have an adverse affect on mental health. Yes, the food we eat today also is partially to be blamed for the dwindling levels of happiness. Just ask your McCholesterol double fat patty unsaturated sugar sauce plastic integrated crispy bacon burger.

Happiness and sadness are states of mind. You can decide and mentally work on your state of mind, but really there isn't much you can do when you stitch all the factors in. You cannot force happiness. If you try too much you just become unhappy because of the disappointment that you aren't as happy as you want to be.

So, is pursuit of happiness the wrong game? Is ignorance truly bliss? Is it that we have become too privileged to recognize our over-exaggerated expectations?

Where is the finish line of this pursuit?

thanks for sharing this on #pypt

I had to come back a day later to give this a good read. And a good read it was! Very well written and the content resonates with me a lot...

But, I'm really missing the substance here and it feels like you're just overstating the obvious, the economic paradigms we have created and environmental toxicity, both social and physical, are really just the easy scapegoats...

Happiness and sadness are states of mind. [...] Where is the finish line of this pursuit?

I would assume there is no finish line! Evolution has created our minds to be able to create incredibly complex yet profoundly simple concepts of "happiness" and "sadness", and just as all life makes use of an energy gradient somewhere, so does our mind!

Maybe we, as a society, are suffering for a reason? It's the perpetual up and down, from abundance to scarcity, tipping the scales to eternally struggle in finding a balance!

I think you hit the mark when you said:

Happiness and sadness are states of mind.

It is only when we realize that happiness comes from within ourselves, that we can learn about true contentment. This was an awesome segment on PYPT this week, and I enjoyed hearing you talk about it! 😊

Just came here after #PYPT...
What really made me think is that you mention;
Happiness and Sadness are both state of mind. It's somehow true, but on the other hand we can't consider our minds and individual being in our being... It's affected by too many factors... Hormones, Day and Nighttime... Even a single scratch can affect our mind through a day...
So maybe we can just get handle of little portions of our brains, the conscious, so then maybe we automatically adjust effect of other factors which are out of our reach.
Nice post ♥
