How to Prepare Your Children to Follow Their Dreams

in #life8 years ago (edited)

One of the most inspiring qualities of children is that they can dream big. Unlike adults, they rarely have restrictions or limitations to the way they think. Which is why even at a tender age, they can imagine becoming whatever they want. From astronauts to Olympians, presidents to surgeons, most children dream big and as their parents and guardians, it is up to us to help them achieve the best that they want to be. Here are a few ways in which you can help your children follow their dreams.

Allow them to dream big- Adults are often pessimistic about their own dreams because they look at things from a more realistic point of view. Children however, are the opposite and rarely think about reality. They dream fiercely and feel that they are capable of achieving the impossible. So avoid giving them reality checks, and instead let them dream of becoming everything they want. Even if you haven’t realized your dream, don’t stop your children from thinking of theirs. The more faith you put in them, the closer they will be to achieving their dreams.

Teach them self discipline- Simply allowing your children to aim big is not enough. They need to learn self discipline, which is essential for helping them see their dream through. Parents can set a good example by adopting good life habits and work ethics. Let them see you working hard, and encourage them to follow self disciplining habits like sleeping early, eating right and staying active. Children tend to repeat what they see and hear, and learning how to discipline themselves will bring them one step closer to fulfilling their dreams.

Help them work towards it- As children grow, they tend to develop interests in a number of things; some of which can help them in the bigger picture. There are small things that you can do, which will help them realize their dreams. For instance, make them write their dream down so that they don’t lose sight of what it is. You can also help them draw up a timeline which will encourage them to stay on track of where they want to be and what they want to achieve in the years to come. While keeping the larger aims in mind, help them develop small and relevant objectives along the way, which when achieved will not only boost your children’s confidence but will also help them to eventually reach the top.

In addition to all of these, it is also important to keep the communication line between you and your children open. Let them know that they can come to you no matter what and try your level best to be the support system they need. Children are bound to fall down somewhere in life. As a parent and guardian, you must not only motivate them to get up and try again, but also support them in the difficult stages. Keep them positive and focused, and give them advice when they need it. All of these can help your little ones turn even their biggest dream into reality.

I agree. I've always been a dreamer, but mostly people see that as a negative thing, like if you dream you're not being realistic. I could still be miserable living in a city, in a job I hated, but instead I followed my dreams and am happy where I am and doing what I'm doing :-) My parents don't always agree but are very supportive
