What Are Some Interesting Facts About Your Job People Might Not Know?

in #life6 years ago (edited)

Some jobs are seen as illustrious, some are seen as prestigious, some seen as exciting, and others misunderstood leaving people to draw their own conclusions about what it is really like.

Whether you're a plumber, a stay at home mother, a petrol station attendant or shelf stacker at Coles, everyone has a story or two to share about their job, a cool or not so cool fact about what it's really like.

Let me share some facts about my job as a front-end developer, to get the ball rolling.

  • I spend hours per week Googling for solutions to my problems. No exaggeration, if people knew how much I relied on Google and how little I actually knew, you would think I was an impostor
  • Sometimes things work and I do not know why, sometimes things do not work and I do not know why
  • The users choice of browser can either make my life easy or a living hell (hello, Internet Explorer users)
  • Getting a website or application to work well on different phones and tablets is not as easy at it sounds, there are a tonne of edge cases
  • I do not design websites, people when I tell them what I do almost always assume I do the design (I take designs and make them real)
  • All developers rely on shared code snippets and the help of other developers sharing their code via StackOverflow and sites like Github (a code storage platform)
  • Not all developers are good at math, I am horrendously bad at math and you would be surprised how very little maths I actually rely on day-to-day
  • To the contrary, many developers do not align with the stereotype of being antisocial, overweight and awkward (myself included). I have worked with a lot of developers who are health conscious, sociable and great communicators (very few fit into the stereotype, this isn't the 80's anymore)
  • I can fix and assemble computers, but I choose not to because that is not my job

I would love to hear some interesting facts about your job that some people might not realise. Do people who work at KFC also eat the food, has anyone been horribly burned in a deep fryer accident whilst at McDonald's?

Most interesting and sad fact about my job? I work for free....

Seriously, I make more money on Steemit than I do in my day job.

Is your day job volunteering?

Nope. Small business owner.
