DOES TIME SPEED UP WITH AGE?

TIME FROM A KIDS PERSPECTIVE

Have you ever had the feeling that the older you got the faster time seems to move? I remember back when I was a kid, waiting for those special days like school holidays, festive holidays and even my birthday but from a kids perspective I remember waiting for what felt like eons for these special days to come, only to have them fly past at the blink of an eye and me having to go back to waiting again.

Another example being back when I was still schooling, being a student all that I wanted was to be done with school, I could not wait to turn eighteen and then twenty one. I remember the wait being dreadfully long but something very strange had happened after I was done with school and I started working. My perception of time began to change. Days began to feel like hours, weekends started to feel like day and years began to feel like months, next thing I know eighteen years have gone by since i left school and began working. How did all that time go by with out me even noticing it?

DOES TIME REALLY SPEED UP WITH AGE?

After doing a little research, I quickly found out that I am not the only person experiencing this conundrum, there are many other people specifically middle-aged and older adults who have the same perception of time that I do. The feeling that time starts to speed up the older a person gets is one of the biggest mysteries but thankfully due to research there has been some intriguing findings.

A survey had been conducted on five hundred people between the ages of fourteen and ninety-four by the University of Munich regarding the pace they felt that time was moving for short duration's like a week, a month and a year. Most of the participants reported that the time passed by fairly quickly however when it came to longer duration's like a decade, a pattern emerged where the older participants perceived time as moving much faster than the younger participants.

According to the research that was conducted, older people feel that way because humans can estimate time from two different perspectives, one being a prospective vantage view meaning that an event is still yet to occur and a retrospective view meaning the event has already passed by.

Our perception of time varies depending on what we are doing and how we are feeling at that specific point in time. I am sure you must of heard the saying "Time fly's when you are having fun" however time also fly's when you are busy at work, and you are too busy to notice the time flying by as you are pressured by deadlines and consumed by stress, caught within a vicious and endless cycle that consumes you day by day.

HOW CAN WE FIX THIS?

The video below addresses some of the possible causes of time being speed up as well as several possible solutions to help you slow down your perception of time.

Thank you for the lovely post, wishing you all the best.:) information is sure to come in handy, but more than that, it gives me great confidence to know your hard work is being the useful.

Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That's relativity.

According to me yes

Many of us feel that time passes more quickly as we age, a perception that can lead to regrets. According to psychologist and BBC columnist Claudia Hammond, “the sensation that time speeds up as you get older is one of the biggest mysteries of the experience of time.” Fortunately, our attempts to unravel this mystery have yielded some intriguing findings.
In 2005, for instance, psychologists Marc Wittmann and Sandra Lenhoff, both then at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, surveyed 499 participants, ranging in age from 14 to 94 years, about the pace at which they felt time moving—from “very slowly” to “very fast.” For shorter durations—a week, a month, even a year—the subjects' perception of time did not appear to increase with age. Most participants felt that the clock ticked by quickly. But for longer durations, such as a decade, a pattern emerged: older people tended to perceive time as moving faster. When asked to reflect on their lives, the participants older than 40 felt that time elapsed slowly in their childhood but then accelerated steadily through their teenage years into early adulthood.
There are good reasons why older people may feel that way. When it comes to how we perceive time, humans can estimate the length of an event from two very different perspectives: a prospective vantage, while an event is still occurring, or a retrospective one, after it has ended. In addition, our experience of time varies with whatever we are doing and how we feel about it. In fact, time does fly when we are having fun. Engaging in a novel exploit makes time appear to pass more quickly in the moment. But if we remember that activity later on, it will seem to have lasted longer than more mundane experiences.

This is magnificent! @beetroot

yes, we will all die, this is a fact. But they are not afraid, we must live, not think constantly about time and death
