Off Leash Adventures; President's Day Weekend - Camping At Fish Creek Wash & Exploring The Wind Caves!

in #life6 years ago (edited)

Hi Everyone!
The thing I love most about living in Southern California is the amount of exploring I get to do all year round! So this President's Day weekend was no exception, we packed up the furbabies in Sydney (My Suzuki Sidekick) and headed off for Anza Borrego in San Diego County (as it was the only place not forecast to rain).

This area is a geological wonderland, full of spectacular formations!
We took Split Mountain Road and followed this in to Fish Creek Wash, where we would camp for the night.

As you drive up the wash bed you are surrounded by these amazing rocks:

and pass through what's called 'The Squeeze':

We drove past the Wind Caves and did a little offroading while looking for a good spot to make camp.

The thing I love most about camping is the amazing views of the sun setting:

Followed by an amazing night sky to do some stargazing! But this time we got a pretty good view of the moon:

I love being able to allow my dogs time to roam offleash, its when they can truly be 'Dogs' and run and play as much as they want

They love being in a new place, as much as we do.

I was surprised to see there are plants growing out here:

And even colorful flowers:

We got a great nights rest in the tent, and packed up to move over to the Wind Caves for the days expedition.
As the parking area in front of the trail head was very busy, we decided to park away from the crowds, and do a quick brunch (breakfast/lunch) before our hike to see the caves.

There was a clear trail head to follow, but the trail does disappear in places as you climb over rocks on the way up. But you can clearly see the trail again once you get through this section.
This is the first Wind Cave we got to:

There was also the 'Potato Chip':

These are some of the other Wind Caves:

From this position we had a spectacular view of 'The Elephant Knees':

We followed the trail up and over to some of the other Wind Caves:

And some more:

I loved how smooth the rocks were!

After walking round a while, we decided to head back down to leave for home. On the way out I noticed this massive square rock, that had fallen off the rock face above. I found it interesting how square the shape was.

This area is full of Geology! I was asking about the lines formed on the sides of the canyon walls from the 20 million years of it flooding, when I spotted a split in the rocks to the side of us. We pulled over so I could check it out:

There was a secret nook!

Perfect place if you were cowboy camping (no tent, just a sleeping bag), as it's not flat enough to put up a tent. But it would definitely be an awesome place to spend a night.

Even on our way out, the dogs were still super excited and taking in everything they could see. Once we got back to the highway they both settled down in the back seat and slept all the way home. Only waking up for their 'Pup Patties' from In 'n' Out (meat patty with no salt, from their Secret menu), which meant they had enjoyed the trip as much as we had!

Thanks for reading guys! Till next time :-D

Its a great place for many things!

What a fantastic way to spend a weekend, I would love to hike here if I get a chance

I hope you get to visit here one day, it really was amazing! If you do plan a visit to Anza Borrego, plan it for Winter, as my shoulder burnt a little on Sunday there. Thanks for the upvote to!
