Happy New Year- Why I Don't Set Resolutions

As we celebrated the end to 2017 and the beginning of 2018 there are many that make resolutions at the start of their new year. If you have traditions of making resolutions to welcome the new year or just celebrate it as a new beginning, whatever your traditions are, Happy New Year to you.

Some people set goals or plans for what they would like to do in their new year. In all reality many people set goals throughout the year. Some things they would like to accomplish or reach that they have been thinking about doing for a long time.

You may call them resolutions at the beginning of the year and think that if you haven't reached what you set out to do that you have failed a resolution. I try to think that you only fail if you don't try. So with that I have decided not to set resolutions and instead just think about things I would like to do this year. No resolutions to worry about breaking.

Some of the resolutions people often set and fail for themselves include but are not limited to:

Diet and fitness
Get out of debt
Quit smoking
Travel more
Quit drinking

These and many others are great to set for your personal goals but they should be treated as long term goals. Then when you reach them sooner that is even better. If you set too big of a goal as short term goals and do not reach them you may feel disappointed and just give up too soon.

If you set smaller goals for yourself that you can set for short term goals, like baby steps, these will be easier to reach sooner and give you a little motivation to keep going.

Traveling could be a big goal for many people, if you set out to travel and you like trains, you could book a day travel at a nearby train station. We don't have very many in my area but they do offer day trips as well as overnight trips. Not a big travel trip but at least it is adding more travel and it could be a new experience for some people.

My main goal as it always has been is to be happy with myself and spending time with family. Now I am not saying I want to be unrealistically happy ALL of the time. I mean really I don't plan on living in an alternate reality where there is only one feeling in the world "Happy". I just mean happy in the way I want to be happy. Sure I have goals just like everyone else in this world, sure I would like to do things I sometimes only dream about. Who wouldn't? Well this year I will just be happy to enjoy any time I have with family. If I travel, see more nature or anything else I would like to do, those I would consider a bonus.

I wish everyone the best in their new year and hope that you reach whatever goal you set for yourself. Just remember it doesn't have to be anything too big if you don't want it to be. Anything you set out to accomplish and reach or even have the courage to attempt is a big win for you.
