We all know about his time with the legendary EAGLES band - so in short, this is a bio overview focusing on Glenn and his life.

Glenn Frey influenced so many people with his music -- we miss him a ton.

Overview:

Glenn Lewis Frey - born November 6, 1948. - Passed away January 18, 2016

  • American singer, songwriter / actor, best known as a founding member of the rock band - Eagles. He was the lead singer / frontman for the band, things he came to share with fellow bandmate and legend in his own right - Don Henley, who split most of the writing with for the band with him.

Frey played guitar, keyboards and the piano. His lead vocals are legendary on some of the Eagles' greatest hits songs such as "Take It Easy",, "Already Gone", "Lyin' Eyes", "New Kid in Town", "Heartache Tonight", "Peaceful Easy Feeling", and"Tequila Sunrise".

The Eagles broke up in 1980, and Frey then started on a great solo career. His first solo album, No Fun Aloud, came out in 1982 & he went on to record Top 40 hits , "True Love", "Soul Searchin'" and "Livin' Right", "The One You Love", "Smuggler's Blues", "Sexy Girl", "The Heat Is On", and "You Belong to the City".

Frey won 6 Grammy Awards & and 5 American Music Awards with the Eagles, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. It was also the first year they were nominated for that milestone.

If you count both his solo career and his legendary time with the Eagles, it measures out that Glenn Frey had 24 Top 40 singles. (Billboard Hot 100.)

Early life of Glenn Frey

Glenn was born in Detroit, Michigan. He grew up in Royal Oak, Michigan, and studied piano when he was 5, and afterwards moved to guitar, & was a player in the mid-60's rock community in Detroit. The Subterraneans band, was 1 of Glenn's earliest ventures, & were so named after the novel penned by Jack Kerouac. His fellow bandmates were also classmates from Dondero High School {Doug Edwards -- (replaced later on by Lenny Mintz) on drums, Bill Barnes & Doug Gunsch on guitar, & the bass was manned by Jeff Hodge.}

Graduating from Dondero in 1966, he was invited to join The Four of Us right away. It was a local band whose leader Gary Burrows had noticed him with the Subterraneans. Glenn also was a member of Oakland Community College during that time, learning vocal harmonies during this time.

Frey then formed the Mushrooms in 1967 with Jeff Burrows who was the brother of his recent former band leader, along with his mates Barnes, Gunch, & Mintz. The same year Frey also met now music royalty Bob Seger, who helped Glenn land a recording & management contract with the label Hideout Records owned by the management team of Seger's. The band's 1st single was also written/produced by Seger titled, "Such a Lovely Child". The Mushrooms were then appearing on TV promoting it.

Frey's plan was to join Seger's group but his mom caught him smoking marijuana with Seger and nixxed Glenn's plan which is kind of funny in retrospect.

  • May 1973 arrest record from the Columbus, Ohio police Dep't for possession and intoxification.

Later in that same year, Frey also formed the band called Heavy Metal Kids with Jeff Burrows, Lance Dickerson, Paul Kelcourse, &Jeff Alborell.

The following year Glenn Frey was 19, and he performed with Seger's band and performed background vocals & played acoustic guitar on the song, "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man". Frey had always said that Bob Seger really encouraged & helped him focus on writing original content The pair remained close, occasionally teaming up to write later on. Glenn would also sing on Seger's songs like the famous "Against the Wind" and also "Fire Lake"

Frey later also dated Joan Sliwin of the local Detroit all female band The Mama Cats, later renaming itself Honey Ltd. when the band relocated to California in 1968.

Some key moments then occurred connected to this period. Frey ventured to L.A. hoping to rekindle things with his girlfriend, and it was then, that he was introduced to J. D. Souther by her sister, Alexandra, who was then dating Souther. Glenn went back to Detroit after 3 weeks, but then again returned to L.A. and formed a team with Souther named Longbranch Pennywhistle. Amos Records signed them and their self-titled album was released in 1969. It was also in this period, that he met Jackson Browne. All 3 artists lived in the same apartment building for awhile, and it is well known that Frey stated in years past, that he learned a great deal about songwriting from Browne working on his craft in the apartment beneath him.

The EAGLES Period: Stuff of Legends.

Now rock legend Don Henley was a drummer in 1970 when Glenn Frey met him, since they were both at Amos Records, & also were both at the Troubadour a lot. Linda Ronstadt was a star at the time, and needed a backup band for her approaching tour. Linda's manager John Boylan went with Frey since they required someone that could sing, & play rhythm guitar.

Frey then approached Don Henley to join and then both Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon were also hired. Some of these backups/band members did change throughout the tour, but while on tour, these 4 fellows discussed forming a band of their own and the Eagles were born! As we know, they continued on to be one of the top bands, of all time.

Glenn Frey wrote / co-wrote and sang a lot of the lead vocals for the Eagles alongside Don Henley. The 2 were the leaders of the super group and that caused well known rifts and problems at times over the years, as in many bands. Most casual music fans even, can name many of the band's hits including "Lyin' Eyes", "New Kid in Town", "Heartache Tonight" and "How Long", "Already Gone", "Tequila Sunrise", "Take It Easy", "Peaceful Easy Feeling" among others.

Break Ups. Make Ups.

There were a small handful of band changes during the life of the Eagles due to various personal/business/creative conflicts but you cannot write about any of them without mentioning the others. Joe Walsh is the best known of the rest of the group - along with Timothy B. Schmit and Don Felder. Long time manager by their side Irving Azoff all the way.

The Eagles broke up around 1980 and reunited in 1994, when they released a new album titled Hell Freezes Over - directly relating the titles to the band's well known fights and very public breakup that shocked the world and saddened music fans.

Frey married twice. He had a storied career and did some acting and made other contributions to the world as well in things like movie themes for the famous Beverley Hills Cop franchise and the Ghostbusters movies.

The Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden album was long awaited and released in 2007, and Frey participated in the tour of the same name from 2008–2011.

Frey was awarded a Doctorate of Music (honourary) from Berklee College of Music with his bandmates Henley, Walsh and Schmit in May, 2012.

If you want to see perhaps the BEST long documentary (3 hours worth) on the Eagles, and covers EVERYTHING I highly recommend the 2013 2-part movie "History of the Eagles". I've watched it twice and they won't be the last times either. It won a 2013 Emmy Award. The related 2 year "History of the Eagles" world tour had their last stop July 29, 2015 at Bossier City, Louisiana. It would end up being Glenn's last appearance publicly with the legendary group.

Frey died at the age of 67 on Jan. 18th, 2016 at the Columbia University Medical Center / New York–Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, from complications of rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia, while recovering from gastrointestinal tract surgery.

The first single from the Eagles in 1972, that put them on the map, is one of the best known songs of all time -- "Take It Easy" and contains those famous lyrics from the song: " Standin' on the Corner In Winslow Arizona..." and on September 24, 2016, the life size statue of Frey was erected to honor his work, in Winslow, Arizona, at "Standing on the Corner Park" in the town.

It's been a whole year Glenn. Rest in Peace. You impacted so many people with your work.

Thanks.

Great post man. I especially love the mugshot you found! Cant's grow up in the 70s without the Eagles being a major influence.

It is so true, I thought of you and @hilarski right off when I wrote this.

That was 7 hours of work for me there struggling to make it look pretty and with the edits and whatnot LOL.

Impressive tribute! I love their music. When I read the title of the songs here, it's like punching the keys on a jukebox - the song starts to play in my head.

Thanks for putting this together!

Typical slow Sunday nite on Steemit LOL, I almost decided to wait til today, so more people could see this, I really think people appreciated this considering the low numbers on the post -- but the comment ratio inside here like yours.

Great comments friend!!! Nice to hear from yiou.

I am still impacted by your post about Cooper, I almost cried a couple days ago just so you know.

Your #MinnowLife friend, BD

Activity certainly does seem to have an ebb and flow. Sort of surprising considering the global makeup of members. I'd have thought it would be more steady. Oh, and it's not always bad to post a lengthy article on a slow night. Folks would have more time to spend per post!

I'm trying to be more active in comments and it's easier with posts like the Frey Tribute, because you've included so many facets to talk about. I rarely comment on the single pic posts, for instance, unless it's splendiforously stupendous. Lol!

Awww, thanks for the support for the Cooper episode. Those are things you just can't plan for and you do the best you can in the moment. I'm a pretty stoic person most of the time (long story), but these incidents slip under my radar and knock me for a loop. I know you have your own challenges, so the support is that much more appreciated! Hugs, bud!

It's funny.

A lot of people that used to interact with me a TON and vice versa and some I even helped them get free things on here to tangibly help them daily -- just stop talking to me on here but they do all day long with everyone else, you see their comments everywhere.

Yet you have stuck with me. And I appreciate that.

Nice post. I love the Eagles.

TY for the comments today.

Great post wonderful tribute bringing back a time when life seemed easy and the music was awesome

Yes, you are right.

TY for the comments today.

Nicely done Barry! The Eagles are one of my favorite bands. Thank you for the tribute.

I spent 7 hours on that. I had a feeling I should msg you - I had a feeling you would appreciate it. I was on the way out the door for my physio work when I realized I once again forgot to credit the img. sources. and had to come back to do it. LOL. I put around the same time in months ago on my Tragically Hip / Gord Downie piece WRT his fight w cancer and the work he does w the band and for humanity. If you want to search it out.

#StillNotABlogger

Thanks man.

Awesome Post. My 18 year old son is an old soul who believes The Eagles to be the best rock band of all time. He would love your post!

Great comments!!! Send it to him and with my regards! Plus, he will see these comments about him and get a charge out of it!
