New Year of Assam, also called Bihu
"Rongali" is derived from "Rong" which means Happiness and Celebrations. Being an agriculture based state, Assam, has always marked Bihu as symbol of Joy. Its also the biggest festival in assam and celebrated in every
corner of the state.
Japi is like a big hat which is used by ladies during dance, Kopophool is a traditional flower and women are worn on their head during dancing.
"Gamusa" is an assamese towel worn ny men on their head and to wrap the dhol.
On the eve of Bihu, the womenfolk clean house, clothes and prepare special traditional food. In rural areas menfolk remain busy in collecting necessary items like "ropes for cattle" and vegetables for next day "Bihu".
On the first day of Bihu is dedicated to cattle, cows and bullocks provide them with means of livelihood. Early morning cows are bathed in river , their feet are washed and their horns and hoofs are painted with different colors and are adorned with flower garland. Vegetables are offered to them, their old ropes are cut and tied with new rope. In the evening they are entertained with cakes especially prepared for them.
On the second day, called "Manuh Bihu" special dishes were prepared like flattened rice, curds and jaggery, sweets are eaten. Youngster prepare themsleves for "Bihu" dance competition.
On the third day which is called "Gosain Bihu" and is dedicated to deities.
On all the three days of festival, troupes of musicians and dancers visit houses and perform dance in open.
