Can We Ever Stop Making Excuses?

in #life6 years ago

Excuses are one thing we almost always find ourselves making (sometimes without even meaning to). We give reasons (and try to convince ourselves) not to do something at a particular time which most times makes us procrastinate (that's if we ever end up doing it).

Excuse-makers are often seen as lazy, I actually don't believe that, that's because we all might be tagged as lazy (because we all have made excuses a few times) and it is pretty unfair to generalize. However, I feel that making excuses can limit one's productivity to a really large extent.

Willpower is awesome but isn't always reliable, sometimes we go low on it and let things slide, but that doesn't mean we should be hard on ourselves for not doing (or doing) certain things. I mean, no matter how upright or strong your willpower is, you probably must have caught yourself making excuses at some point.

There are times whereby we took actions without really rationalizing or wasting time thinking things through and it turned out great (and a few times that it didn't), Although I think it is nice we think things through before takings actions (sometimes), sometimes, prolong thought might let the urge to make excuses creep into our minds (which we often times regret). For us to get the result we really want, we have to try and reduce the rate at which we make excuses, or... get rid of it (if possible)

Here are a few things that I think will help you get through whenever you feel the urge to make excuses (that you really shouldn't)

1. Find out why you are making these excuses

I believe this should be the first step to take when we want to tackle anything. In order to deal with it, we have to get to the root of it. Then, you will be clear about what the issue is about and how to deal with it properly. The reason you are making excuses might be due to  fear, or it might be stress, whatever the reason might be, we can't all handle them in the same way or using the same method.w

2. Remind yourself of the reason why that task is important

Reminding yourself of how important that task is might give you the kick you need to get that thing (that's if it really is important). I might  not always work, but it definitely will work most times.

3. Break Big tasks into Smaller Ones

Task that appear bulky have the tendency of making us come up with excuses, so it is important we break them into small bits. I get amazed at how my mum starts from small tasks like clearing the table, to putting the whole house in order, or from washing her cloth that got stained with sauce while cooking to washing all her clothes that needed to be washed. She would say, "sometimes we need to trick our minds in order to get certain things done".She tricked her mind into believing all she needed to do was a really small task and kept the trick until she did almost everything she needed to do! Most times, when the task looks big, it tends overwhelm us and way us down, so why not trick your mind into doing it?

4. Be Ready to Face Your Fears

Sometimes, our excuses are out of fear of taking risks (or stepping out of our comfort zones), we should be ready to face them so as to cut down excuses.

Excuses can be really powerful (but in a negative way of course). I don't know if we can ever stop making excuses, but I am sure we can slow down the rate at which we make them (or manage them a bit better), let your priorities be clear so tasks wouldn't appear overwhelming. We shouldn't allow excuses hold us back. we should find solutions instead!

Much Love, Audrey
