What every Oversea Chinese should know before you plan to live/ or study in Beijing.

  1. The spoken mandarin is very different.
Better get used to the strong Beijing accent will a lot of ‘er’ sound at the end of certain words. If you never watch Chinese movies from China, better get started. Because the mandarin you’ve been speaking all these while in this might be full of Taiwan and Cantonese influence. But don’t worry; most people will forgive you because they will think you are from the south . Be sure to listen carefully, Beijingers (that's what we call them) speak slightly faster than your regular speed, with lots of "er".

说中文,不是华语

来到北京第一件事就是要习惯到处的“儿”

2.If you want to cut cost...
China is the land where you need to bargain most of the time! Especially for clothes, bags and especially at tourist spots! Chain stores and supermarkets usually have fixed price. So if you want to cut down your living expense, better start finding out where the locals go for their shopping.
There are Walmart and Carrefour in Beijing, and they provide reasonable prices.

3.Get Chinese friends. MADE IN CHINA friends.
In this world there are lots of Chinese immigrants or people from your country. But if you want to learn how to live in China, it is best for you to get some real Chinese friends. That way, you can learn a lot from them.

4.You can never be a foreigner and ask for help in English
If you looked Asian, this is the fact that you need to accept. Speaking English will bring stares and weird looks because the universal truth is you look Asian and Chinese. Unless you're a Hapa.

5.People tend to think you are very good in the Chinese language just because you can read and write.
You may know enough Chinese words thanks to some private Chinese education you had learning characters and Chinese idioms, but it can't be compare to the Chinese students in your university.

So now you get it? Now let us get back to the Christmas decorating.
