Smartphone care and repair series - Part 2

Hello Steem, It's time for the second part in my Smartphone care and repair series, where we will be covering another low end, but very useful troubleshooting technique for your device - The Soft Reset.

If you've ever had a problem where your phone simply won't turn on if you hold the power button down, one of two things is happening here. Either your phone is simply out of battery and needs to be charged, OR, your operating system inside the device has simply locked up. What you need to do to solve this problem is reset the battery inside the device.

If you have an older model phone that has a removable battery, simply remove your back cover, take out the battery, put it back in, and attempt to turn the phone back on. It should work unless you have no charge.

If you have a newer device with a built in battery, you need to perform the Soft Reset.

The soft reset can vary by model of device, but I will present the 3 most common smartphone brands in North America and the way that you will usually be able to soft reset any model of that brand using the same procedure.

For LG G6: Simultaneously press and hold the Volume Down button (located on the left edge) and the Power button (located on the back) until the device powers off (approximately 5 seconds) then release.

For Samsung s8: Note Allow several seconds for the reboot process to complete.
To soft reset a frozen Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus you need to hold the power button and the volume-down button for roughly 7 seconds.

Let go of the buttons once you feel the device vibrate and see the Samsung Galaxy S8 logo on the screen.

Your phone will then reboot.

For iphone 7: To hard reboot an iPhone 7, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons for about 10 seconds, or until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen. Once you see the Apple logo, let go of both buttons and allow the device a few moments to reboot back into iOS

As you can see, in general it is usually press and hold the power button and volume down button together for several seconds until it reboots, but sometimes it will vary and be power and volume up

You can find instructions for soft resetting your specific device by doing a quick web search of you brand and model and the term "soft reset"

Important note: You may also notice if you plug your phone in when the screen is black that it won't respond to charge. If this is the case, the same rule applies. Your phone may not be damaged, just unplug the device, attempt a soft reset, and see what happens.

I hope this information has been useful for you. I have instructed many people to try this when they described the black screen issue and it is usually the answer to their problem.
