Vintage Voices - the true story of a Fruit Bowl filled with Love
Our neighbors prepared fresh fruit from the garden and served it in a bowl. The apples that grew on the old apple tree were wrinkly and small but tasted wonderfully sweet. We sat at the table in the garden and on the table there was this lovely, antique bowl filled with fruit. I learned a lot from our neighbors.
Their life had been adventurous before. They traveled around the world and had lived and worked in South Africa, Hong Kong, in the USA and other places. The husband of my neighbor was an engineer before he retired. Their stories were so fascinating. Both were around the same age as my grandparents in those days.
My neighbors knew of course that I felt drawn into the wide world. I had probably told my wish to travel the world a hundred times. When we had to move, they gave me the bowl, which was always filled with apples from the old tree in the garden.
She said:
"I cannot give you the old apple tree as a gift, he loves for sure to stay in our garden. I know for sure, that one day, you will travel around the world. This bowl may accompany you wherever you may live in the future.“
To this day this is our fruit bowl and whenever I take an apple out of its bowl I think of my old neighbors and the old apple tree in their orchard.

How wonderful @anutu - and with this bowl you get to stay close to the spirit of the old tree you loved so dearly by holding its memory close to your heart! I loved your entry. I'll be writing and posting mine a little later.

Oh, I'm curious, so curious what yours will be. I'm so happy that we were able to take the bowl with us to the island, it would have been not that easy to carry the tree all the way in the plane :) but the tree is here now in a sense, precisely like you said. It's very close to my heart.

This bowl looks amazing, I wonder how old that bowl is, yet its still looks really nice. You may not be able to carry the apple tree but you can carry the bowl the apple has always been served in and that way, you will feel that apple close to you. What a great gift your neighbor has given you!
Some time ago a friend visited me, that is into antique stuff and he said it is probably around 1890. I decided to leave it like it is and not to polish it to keep the character. I think it's a very generous gift, but the emotional value is much higher for me. Every day, I remember this lovely friend through it.
Since 1890? Wow! I wish I could have something like that... Oh yeah, for you to have taken care of it for that long it must have a special place in your heart.
Yeah, it's that old, my friend said. It must have been very special to them. Many years ago, I tried to figure out if they are still alive, but they both died peacefully. I went to their graves and laid some flowers down. I think they had a fulfilled life and were happy together.

I believe they did live a fulfilled life! It was so thoughtful of you to visit their graves and also take flowers with you!

Yes. Today, when I think about that time in the past, I feel how they knew me probably better than I knew myself at that time. They were special.
