Having Negative Thoughts? You can deal with them - Here's How!

in #life7 years ago

Hey dearies... Hope you had a lovely day today?
Let's go through this together. I'll start with sharing an experience.

Few months back I kept having some crazy thoughts that I was going to be involved in an accident. Usually I brushed it off but on one occasion I followed it through and was horrified at how I was flowing. The accident to the hospital scene and my parents getting the information.... I was crying and shaking until I snapped.

Why the hell are you doing this to yourself? Something in my head asked me.

I know I am not the only one whose thoughts drift towards a negative point at times (probably yours isn't that bad).

Negative thoughts come in many forms, could be cravings for an unhealthy meal, jelousy, depression and other stuffs and we honestly cannot totally stop them but here are ways we could reduce the occurrence of those thoughts. I will share some I know and you can add other points if I miss them....

Oh Wait!!!!
Before we talk about waysof controlling these thoughts let's get two things straight.

  • First..... the more we try not to think about negative things, the stronger the urge to think about them comes so this might not necessarily be a way to get outa this.
  • Second.... these thoughts do not mean you're evil okay? They have nothing in relation to who you are.

Now we back to how to reduce them:

  • Be conscious of these thoughts: It doesn't matter how bad the thoughts are, if you allow yourself to be "aware" that these are just thoughts then it will probably slip away with time. Avoid judging yourself for having such thoughts, you're human and these things happen every now and then.

  • Allow the thoughts: Why does it feel like you have one eyebrow up after reading that? You should be getting rid of it why allow it? Well... that's the irony. If your negative thoughts are like mine, you would probably get bored after thinking it through and decide to move onto something else or change scripts. That way it would be gone before you know it. Go with the flow but control the process.

  • Control what gets in: By what gets in I mean what you listen to or watch. If you easily get negative thoughts then you should really stay away from watching or listening to things like horror movies because you tend to play back the movie in your mind.

  • Try to deliberately Act this bad thought: This is a little bit extreme but it's going to help you understand it is just a thought. If you watch a tv series called Chicago Meds you could have stumbled on an episode where a psychiatrist treated a patient who kept having thoughts that he wanted to kill his wife by stabbing her countlessly with a knife. The psychiatrist locked herself in a room with the man and a knife, made him imagine she was his wife and talked him into acting his thoughts.... He eventually found out he couldn't. It was just a thought not who he really was. Extreme but proved the point that Your thoughts are JUST thoughts.

Hi there

I really liked your post. It is true that people tend to have certain thoughts and have difficulties to get rid of them. Especially if they are negative ones. When you are always thinking about something negativ, you tend to generate an internal stress situation out of thin air. A remedy is then to breath deeply and slowly during at least a minute. Then force yourself to put a smile on your face. I can tell you from my own experience. This helps ;-)

Oh true... Forcing a smile could be difficult but it is definitely helpful. Thanks deary @achim03

@annieben wow this is lovely...i really gained a lot from this post 👏

Thanks deary

Thank you for sharing your experience @annieben. We all have negative thoughts. And there is nothing wrong with a passing negative thought, the trouble comes when we let them linger and elaborate the story in our heads. Being aware, watching them come and letting them go is the key. Concentrating on taking deep inhales and LONG exhales helps to move from the head back into the body. Realizing that your thoughts are not YOU and you do have the power to switch the radio channel you've tuned into is possible for all of us. Mind can be both our master and our servant. Training the mind takes some effort and it is an ongoing process. Just like with training a dog you have to keep reinforcing the behavior you want to see repeated.
