Emotional Trauma - Don't let it hold you back!

Ever been in a situation where it seems you are your only kind of person in the entire world, no one seems to be thinking like you? At this point, you don’t even understand the right approach or reaction to anything or the right emotional response to situations, you become more afraid of living another day to facing death.

Do you really know what this means?
It means you’re being traumatized. Not just being traumatized but emotionally traumatized.

Let’s define what trauma is, shall we?

TRAUMA:

It’s a behavioural state or a very difficult/unpleasant experience resulting from severe mental or emotional stress or physical injury. Emotional trauma result from an extraordinary stressful event that shatters your sense of security, making you feel helpless in a dangerous world.

A situation leaves you feeling overwhelmed and isolated, can also leave you traumatized; crazy thing is, it doesn't always have to involve physical harm.

Truth is a few of us have been traumatized without even knowing. I have been traumatized emotionally so many times which has brought me down to writing this. One misconception people get about emotional trauma is that it is always associated with just heartbreak mostly from a lover or fiancé. That's quite a limited notion to have about it.

Emotional trauma can come from people judging you wrongly, suspecting you unnecessarily, seizing your right of freedom and playing with your sense of security; when you aren't trusted by people that matter to you, when people don’t seem to see your effort and when you are never appreciated but always abused or called a failure.

Aside that, other factors include sexual abuse, accident, loss of a loved one, severe injuries that give the never-gonna-disappear scars in weird places, the loss of a job, etc.

Emotional trauma usually goes in hand with psychological trauma of which we can define alongside together.
Now an event can lead to trauma if:

  • It happens a lot of times,

  • It occurs unexpectedly,

  • Someone (especially those you regard highly) was intentionally cruel,

  • You felt powerless to prevent it

  • You felt defenseless of the truth etc

Trauma experiences leaves you with;

  • Shock, denial or disbelief
  • Trust issues which makes it difficult to handle any love relationship effectively
  • Anxiety and fear
  • Guilt and shame, self-blame
  • Self-pity, bitterness, sadness
  • Feeling disconnected or not belonging

Physically, you begin to experience

  • Unnecessary fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Irritations especially by presence of people
  • Loss of appetite, unhealthy eating habit
  • Aches, pains
  • Muscle tension

Healing from trauma.

It takes time to heal from trauma, but with the right approach, and having the right people in the right environment can help you heal faster.

To be free from trauma, here's a few things you could try out:

  • Acknowledge your feeling about the trauma and accept them. You cannot deal with a problem if you cannot see it.

  • Try exercising and doing things that bring the best in you, don’t isolate

  • You can make new friends, its exciting to meet new people. Don't cower away.

  • Take care of your health, by that I mean pay quite a good attention to it and get a lot of sleep

  • Avoid drugs and alcohol. They could make you vunerable and that could lead to poor decisions.

Note: Don’t get into any form of love relationship or love circle during the period of trauma because at that point you really are only reacting to desperation and long for care.
