He Never Gave Up On Her

They went to the same elementary school at the same time, but they never met.
She knew his best friend, but his best friend never mentioned him to her neither her to him. Not purposely! It just happened like that, and they didn't meet each other.

They went to the same high school at the same time, but their paths still didn't cross.
She was a good friend of his sports teammate and that teammate's girlfriend as well as with his classmate who was popular DJ at that time, but although they didn't meet, and nobody mentioned him to her neither her to him.

It was early spring, and some festival event was in town. His best friend bought the tickets for both of them and went to pick him. There were a lot of young people, and when they entered the concert hall, he was just looking around for some pretty girls.

After some while, his best friend pointed on a young girl on the stage who was one of the official festival announcers and said,
- I know her!
- Oh, come on! You must be kidding me! - He looked at his best friend with disbelief.
- I really do! - The best friend replied.

Seemed like he was playing a bit with that thought. So, he didn't say anything at first, but then he commented.
- No use! She must be having ten dates on standby for each of her fingers.
- After the concert, we can still go to her just to say "Hello!" - The best friend persisted. - You'll see, she is sweet, not some unapproachable vain girl.
- Will see! - He replied shortly.

After the concert, they went to the backstage doors. Many people were lurking there. His best friend somehow managed to break through the crowd while he decided to wait next to the doors.

A lot of people were approaching her, but she smiled when she saw his best friend (it was her friend too) and took some time to talk with him on a side. He told her he is with the friend there, but she couldn't spot him in the crowd.

Two weeks later in the center where she was volunteering a colleague who just arrived from the outside told her someone is looking for her at the main entrance. She climbed up the stairs, but there was no one there, so she went back thinking it must be some mistake.

Ten minutes later another colleague arrived telling her the same, that someone is asking for her at the main entrance. She went up again. And again there was no one there. She turned back down the stairs furious, convinced their colleagues made a good joke on her account.

She approached those two ready to tell them what she thinks about their joke when her friend entered the room calling her excitedly.
- There are two guys upstairs, - she was telling her in between breaths - looking for you.
At first, she looked at her friend suspiciously, thinking "Even you, Brutus!" But then, crossed her mind her friend wouldn't joke about something like that, especially when she heard her saying,
- You know, that taller one is very handsome. I mean, if you don't have any plans for him, I...
She didn't listen to her anymore. She went up again, for the third time.

And there they were waiting for her. She didn't know that other guy (him), but she knew his best friend. They came to invite her to the party that the unknown other one was preparing in his house next week. Shortly she doubted whether to accept the invitation or not as she didn't know the host, but knowing her friend wouldn't drag her in some trouble, she agreed if she can bring her best friend with her what they both confirmed.

Next weekend, together with her best friend she arrived at the party. They met many new people there and had fun mingling around. Her friend had to go home earlier, and as she was staying at her house over the weekend, they were just planning to leave when he approached her asking for the dance.

Just before the music stopped, he asked her to date him one of the following days. She was staring at him not quite sure what he just asked her, while he continued by determining meeting time and place. The music stopped, she still didn't answer anything, and they were the only couple standing on the dancing floor. Aware of all the eyes that were pointed at them and not wanting to keep her friend waiting for her longer she compulsively said, Yes!

Later that evening, laying in the bed at her friend's house she kept asking herself and her friend what was wrong with her that she accepted. She was just several months out of her past relationship which was very tough for her, and she still didn't feel entirely emotionally free from it.

She couldn't sleep, and she kept repeating almost all night long the same questions.
- Why did I say, "Yes!"??? - What I was thinking? - I don't even know this guy!
Her friend tried to end her agony by saying,
- OK, you said it and now what? There is no turn back! Besides, one date doesn't obligate you to anything, and for sure you are not going to die if you go out with him once!
- On the other hand, - her friend continued, - if you don't want to go so much, you still have the option just not to show up!

She couldn't do that if nothing because of his best friend she knew for years. How she would ever show up in front of him and explain herself. But her friend still gave her an idea.

On a date day, she dressed up and went out, but not to meet him. A group of her friends was going to the cinema, and she decided to join them as usual. The only difference would be, this time she would pass by the specific place just in case.

The specific place was the place where she should meet him as agreed a few days before. But she was almost whole hour late, and she was more than 100% sure he wouldn't be there anymore.

She walked without worry. If anyone ever asks it wouldn't be that she didn't show up, it would just be that she was late and he didn't wait.

Approaching the meeting place she didn't see him. Great! Everything was just as planned. She speeded up not to be late for the movie. Few steps more and when she raised her head again, she saw him standing there, still waiting for her.

Four days ago a middle-aged man entered the house. A middle-aged woman was sitting at the table and didn't hear him. He approached her, leaned over her, hugged her and kissed her.
She smiled. She knew it was him. She turned, hugged and kissed him back.
- Happy anniversary, honey! - He whispered in her ear.
- 31 years passed after your second "Yes!" - He added and gave her a wink.

If you don't know who they are, you would easily recognize them as they still walk around holding hands.
