Wisdom of the Day - It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.
Not long ago, I read a quote from John Maxwell in which he said that life is about 20% what happens to you, and 80% about how you react to it. This saying from Epictetus is very similar. All sorts of things will happen to all of us. Life hasn't promised any of us that it will treat us nicely. There will be humps, there will be troublesome days... but we must never forget that we are supposed to control the ship, not our environments.
What does this really mean?
It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters. (Epictetus)
If someone decides to speak badly about you behind your back, what do you do? Do you start to frat and just throw ugly words back at them? Or will you walk the higher way? If someone is throwing all the blame on you, what do you do? If you break a leg that destroys your dream of becoming an athlete... what do you do?
The most important is to understand that life isn't about everything that happens to you, but about how you decide to react to those matters. Will you consider yourself a victim, or will you be a victor, taking whatever comes against you as a tool to take you even higher?
That is what I want to challenge us all with today! Turn what is meant to break you into a stepping stone, that will take you even higher!
