Life is the art of drawing without an eraser. (John Gardner)

in #life3 years ago

Hello everyone! Today I would like to share a quote that I actually have to think about a bit myself in order to understand it and get the essence of it. What does it really mean? What did John Gardner mean when he said that life is the art of drawing without an eraser? What does it mean?

Can you imagine drawing without an eraser? It means that you have to carefully think through every little action you do on the paper, because it cannot be removed afterward. It stays there. Of course, you can use other colors to try to make it look better or use techniques to fix things, but still - it is there.

What about life?

Well, life is exactly the same? It isn't like making a draft for an article that you can modify at all times, and even after publishing, you can change the text (at least on the Internet). Every single step you make is a step that cannot be reminded. Whatever you have done has been done, and it cannot be removed. That sounds quite scary and threatening, doesn't it? Indeed, it is scary.

I guess it should help us bring the focus on actually thinking through our actions and not just playing around pretending like nothing really matters. Everything matters. Of course, you shouldn't go around being afraid of making mistakes all the time, but you shouldn't run around telling yourself that nothing really matters either... because it does! What you do today will impact your life tomorrow, it will impact your family, your friendships, your job... so many things!
