How to choose a quality wine. 8 things to keep in mind

in #life7 years ago

You are in a shop and you've got to choose between dozens of wine bottles. But how to choose a good wine? Why is the degree of alcohol important?

Red or white, sour or sweet, with fruity flavor or not, wines have more secrets behind them than those things written on the label. An expensive wine does not necessarily guarantee the quality. The price of wine is determined by its rarity or the producer's reputation.

An essential step in choosing wine is choosing the purpose for which it is drunk. In general, red wine is drunk with more consistent meals, red meat or red sauce, white for light meals - salads, fish, snacks, and rosé for spicy meals.Below is all you need to know about wine in 8 basic steps.

1. Glass label

You can find out a lot of information about the wine when you study the bottle label. So the name of the producing company will be written on the top, followed by the type of wine, region, type of grapes used and the year of manufacture. At the bottom of the label you will find how much alcohol it has.

2. Serving temperature

The temperature of serving the wines varies according to their type. Red wine should be served at room temperature, at about 20-25 degrees Celsius, while rose wines need a slightly lower temperature, between 7-13 degrees Celsius.

White and sparkling wines should be cold when we serve them, so store them in a place with a low temperature below 5 degrees Celsius.

3. Which glasses to use

Every wine comes with his glass. I could say we should choose glasses according to the type of wine consumed. It is true that the variety presented in the picture above is quite large, but make sure you have at least some models, if you are going to try different types of wine.

4. How to hold and shake the glass of wine

It's a practice reserved to experts, but you might at some point play this role too. The way you hold and shake the glass lightly can affect the taste of the wine. So, if you hold your hand on the top of the glass, you could warm a wine that should be drunk cold.

Turning the liquid into the glass allows the smell to fill the glass, an important detail in finding its flavor.

5. The color of wine

Wine is not just red, rosy or white. In fact, the shade of wine indicates its age and type. If the wine is not clear, that might mean something is wrong with it, so ask for another glass of wine to convince you about that aspect.

6. Alcohol content

The alcohol content of wine varies between 11-14%. Lighter wines have less alcohol, while stronger wines have a higher amount of alcohol. Generally, light wines should be drunk within 3 days of opening the bottle, while stronger wines can be stored for up to 10 days.

7. The aroma of wine

Wine flavors are also important: fruity, sweet, spicy, mineral, floral are some of the most common flavors.

8. Tannins

Tannin is a textural element of wine that gives it a dry taste. Tannins offer wines a bitter or astringent taste, but also a complex flavor.

What is your favorite wine and why?

This is a very nice write-up. Covers most parts. Great stuff.

Nice post! Always good to know the appropriate glass for the suitable wine. "Strong wines can be drunk within 10 days of opening" Though you can be drunk within minutes....
