Let us remember Sméagol who died on this day, March 25th.

It's easy to write off Sméagol as a villian but he was really the hero who destroyed Sauron, giving up his own life in the process. OK, a little bit of a stretch but remeber it was Gollum who was the evil overpowering one inside the twisted mind of Sméagol . The one ring corrupted the once Stoor hobbit splitting his mind into the two. Sméagol , the scared but helpful guide to Frodo and Sam and Gollum, the cunning, sneeking, hand over the hobbits to a big spider one to regain the ring.
In the end the ring possessed and controled Frodo and he claimed it as his own. It was then Sméagol pounced and biting the finger off Frodo to take back the ring he saved not just Middle Earth but Frodo from becoming a tool of the ring in it's search to return to Sauron. Doing some nifty dance moves and leaps poor Sméagol forgot where he was and fell off the ledge and into the fires of Mount Doom.
So, today marks that day, March 25th when Sméagol died (ending his tortured life at the hands of the ring ) and Middle Earth was saved, the darkness of Sauron was ended forever.
RIP Sméagol , saviour of Middle Earth.

I wouldn't say Smeagol was a great guy, even pre-ring. I mean he did murder Deagol to get said ring even before Smeagol ever tried it on.
