It's time to stop bullying, children deserve a better life.

in #life8 years ago

I will start this with a few figures and where I got them from.

Office of National Statistics had recorded 176 cases of suicides of 10- to 14-year-olds between 2000 and 2008 in England, Scotland and Wales. - Beatbullying , a UK bullying prevention charity 2010

33% of those being bullied have suicidal thoughts and 1.5 million young people have been bullied within the past year. - Ditch the Label, anti bullying charity. Annual Bullying Survey 2016

There were over 25,700 Childline counselling sessions with children about bullying last year. -NSPCC

There are no official statistics for childhood bullying, but it is estimated that every child in the UK knows someone affected by it. If the bullying is physical then the law can act but often the bullying isn't physical but what must seem like a constant mental assault on the individual. Often the victim can't even escape online as the bullying follows them there.
One of the affects of bullying is social anxiety which leads to isolation, combined with depresion, it is a dangerous mix and it's no wonder that a third of bullying victims think about suicide.

This problem is massive.

Lets put it in contex, more children have died as a result of being bullied than from the so called massive threat of religious extremists and the government spares nothing in tackling that.

Yet where is the laws and punishment to protect children?

According to GOV.UK the governments online site:
By law, all state (not private) schools must have a behaviour policy in place that includes measures to prevent all forms of bullying among pupils.
This policy is decided by the school. All teachers, pupils and parents must be told what it is.

and.

Some forms of bullying are illegal and should be reported to the police. These include:
violence or assault, theft, repeated harassment or intimidation, eg name calling, threats and abusive phone calls, emails or text messages, hate crimes.

The simple fact is no school will admit to having a bullying problem, trust me on this they will do everything to sweep it under the carpet. Also many victims don't have the confidence to speak out as a lack of real action will just make matters worse.
In 2014 the government spoke of adding an an amendment to the criminal justice bill with 'new rules at combating trolls that sexually harass and verbally abuse people on the internet or via mobile phones in England and Wales.'

I think things need to go further, if a child commits suicide because of bullying then the bullys should be face trial for assisted manslaughter with a prison sentence to match the crime. It is time to make schools face up to the problem and face up to the problems in our schools so they act against the bullies rather than trying to hide it. We need our government to treat this problem with an equal level as they do terrorism as it's far more deadly in our country.

The death of a child is always tragic and crushing to a family, to lose a child to suicide because of bullying...

We need more than words and campaigns, we need real action to stop the destruction of lives, either from suicide or from destroying a childs belief in themselves.
