Is the internet overreacting to the death of Carrie Fisher?
All over social media people are reacting to the news today that Carrie Fisher has died, aged just 60 years old.
There are those who are calling people out, pointing out how people die all the time and far worse events are happening in the world. Now while they have a point they are missing THE point.
We live in a world shaped by films and music as much as events around the world, where so much going on in the world is sad and terrible films and music are an escape, a doorway to a happy place. To many people there is no bigger set of films than Star Wars, it's (almost) 40 years of great adventure and memories.
Star Wars not only changed action/ adventure films but also the toy market. It radically changed our childhood and gave us so many happy memories of a Galaxy far far away. We watched the films and spent hours with the toys creating our own adventures, it was a place we could keep going to where we didn't have to grow up. Come on who doesn't have a lightsaber fight with rolls of christmas wrapping paper?
Then when we grew up we got to share this amazing adventure with our own children. To many Star Wars became part of family time and Carrie Fisher was a central part of Star Wars and so many boys first crush. Added to the fact she was our favourite Princess she was such a great person, far from a perfect person she had demons but ones she fought and then made a joke about. In life she was as strong as the princess she played.
So is the internet overreacting?
Today many people saw a part of a happy childhood slip away; yes we still have the films and memories but a person who brought them alive has gone.
So R.I.P. Carrie Fisher and thanks for the happy memories.
the people claiming overreaction are just jealous they don't have such iconic memories, unclouded by a deluge of media crap.
i don't entirely mean that, it was just fun to say, but partially true.
the media today is too much, too fast, and most of it is forgettable nothing.
the older generation mostly don't see sci-fi as anything but cartoons.
there is also the fact that our myths are being twisted to control, and the archetypes are being turned upside down.
I liked her better in blues brothers.
I like the Blues Brothers but haven't seen it in many years but Star Wars has stuck with me since I was a 6 year old going to see it in the pictures.
