The russian usa space race some would say? also to give some illusion of expanding humans humanity beyond earth in to other solar systems? which makes me laugh! and one of the obvious reasons would be to keep the ponzi monetary fiat debt system going? there are many others out there dexternemrod which just a click of the search bar would reveal.
