What we should know: Tips-Body Language (Chap.4_Part 2)

in #life7 years ago

In the previous issue we learned about how to distinguish a rubbed palm. This is because there are times when this gesture will indicate that we will get a benefit, but it can also indicate that another person is the one who gets the positive result. We also include some exception to the rule and a tip for the case in which you are a seller.

If you have not read it, I invite you to read it here:
What we should know: Tips-Body Language (Chap.4_Part 1).

Interlock Hands Gestures

The gesture of interlacing the fingers of the hands may seem a gesture of wellbeing because often the people who do it are smiling. However, the research carried out by Nierenberg and Calero on this position of the hands with interlaced fingers concluded indicating that it corresponds to a gesture that denotes frustration, and that the people who do it are disguising a negative attitude.

This type of gesture has 3 main positions:

(a) Interlocking hands in front of face.
(b) Interlocking hands resting on the desk.
(c) Interlocking hands on the skirt / trousers when sitting or in front of the pelvis when standing.

In general, there seems to be a relationship between the height at which the interlaced hands meet with respect to the intensity of the negative attitude. Being a directly proportional relationship. That is, dealing with the person will be more difficult the higher the hands are, in other words, the more difficult it will be to treat people with the position (a) than the people with the position (b).

Like any of the negative attitude cases, it is required to take some action to get rid of this position and expose the palms and the front part of the body, otherwise, the person will maintain his posture reflecting a hostile attitude.

Gestures with hands in ogive

This type of gesture, unlike the rest, does not need other gestures or a context in which it was observed in order to be interpreted. The gesture of the hands in ogive as it was called by Birdwhistell, is an exception in itself, since it is often used in isolation and without combining with other gestures.

This gesture is often used by people who trust themselves, those who are superior or those who use very little gesticulation, denoting with it, a security attitude.

According to Allan Pease, this gesture is frequently shown in the interaction between boss and subordinate, and it can be a gesture that indicates an attitude of trust and "knowing everything". Expressing that managers, accountants, lawyers, among other professionals, use this kind of gesture when giving instructions to their subordinates.

There are two versions of this gesture:

  • Ogive up: It is used when the person is speaking, that is, when the person is speaking. However, when a person makes the warhead up and throws his head back, it shows an air of arrogance or presumption.
  • Ogive down: It is used when you are listening. According to Nierenberg and Calero, women use more this version of hands in warhead.

In general, this gesture is positive; however, it can be used in positive or negative circumstances, which can lead to misunderstandings.

For example, a salesperson shows his products to a customer during the presentation and when the customer finishes the customer adopts the gesture of hands in ogive.

How do we know if the presentation was successful or not?
Well, depending on the circumstances, you can decipher if it was positive or negative.

  • If the ogive is produced after other positive gestures; such as, open the palms, lean forward, lift the head, among others, the result is positively positive.

  • If the ogive is produced after a series of negative gestures; such as crossing your arms, legs, looking away, among other gestures in which you bring your hand to your face, means that surely the result is negative.

In both cases, the ogive denotes an expression of security in the client, but for the seller it means a positive result in the first case, and a negative result in the second case.
