In the book, "The Epigrams of Oscar Wilde" (1952), Alvin Redman quoted the above-cited in conversation and attributed this to Oscar Wilde.

Love is a difficult concept to explain but for me I always associate love with God though Oscar Wilde may have not referred this quote to my meaning of love. Nevertheless, for me, I grew up knowing that love is God and that when we believe in God, love can fill our hearts. The love we feel for our parents, our children, our friends and other people all come from our belief in God. And so, when love is lost in our hearts, we felt the darkest moments of our lives because it is love that gives meaning and light to our life and every beautiful thing follows just like each wonderful thing we feel in the brightest moments of our lives when we are surrounded by the people who love us.
