THEORY: All The Kids in Cartoon Network's ED, EDD and EDDY are DEAD and Live in PURGATORY

Growing up, I relish hearing the whistle-like theme song of Ed, Edd and Eddy, simply because after the show, comes MEGAS XLR which obviously was my favourite Cartoon Network show. My younger sister, being a huge fan of the show will glue herself to the T.v, with the t.v remote firmly grasped in her hands. What that meant for I and my brothers was that we have to either watch the show or go do something.

Recently, I can across a thread on Twitter which explains in great detail the theory of the cartoon, revealing some hard to dispel facts about the show. After reading it all, my heart wept, that I decided to make a post about it.

For those of us (the non-nineties kids) who are not familiar with the cartoon. Here is a little synopsis.

Ed, Edd, and Eddy is an animated, eccentric adventure of three halfwits depicted as classic anti-heroes. The cartoon portrays adolescent schemes, friendships, and mishaps. There are several weird things on the show that made it endearing, and attention-grabbing.

The Theories

While conducting the necessary research for this post, I realized that these theories have been in existence for some time now (2-3 years). So, I believe some of us know about this already, so I'll make the major theories bullet point and shed some light on each character.

• First off, everyone on the show is dead, and the cul-de-sac neighbourhood that all the kids live in is an endless purgatory

• If you take a close look at the tongue colour of the characters, you'll find out that they are blueish greyish similar to that of dead corpses. The same can be said of their skin tones, which is a weirdish yellow, not the same colour you should expect from a normal living person

• There is no single adult shown in the entirety of the show, although they mention then, we never got to see any of them. Except for once when Eddie's elder brother was shown, and that was when they left cul-de-sac (aka purgatory)

• It is quite hard to pinpoint a point in time when the show actually occurred, in some episodes, you'll see the kids using a typewriter, in order episodes, they are seen using a computer. Then you later see them with cassette tapes, CDs. Point is, throughout the show, there was the use of a wide array of different technologies from different points in time. This goes further to prove that the kids are from different points in time

• ROLF

Who was the son of an immigrant shepherd from the early 20th century. He lived and work with his family on the family farm, he was the first to live on land known as the cul-de-sac. Rolf died in 1903 in the family farm, after being trampled to death by a Bull who broke out its cage. He continued his duties as a farm boy in the afterlife, by taking care of his animals on a daily basis.

• JIMMY

Jimmy's was a sickly and secluded child who struggled with leukaemia. He created Plank which he made to compensate for his abundance of spare time, and lack of friends. Plank was meant to stay with Jimmy for the rest of his life, even as he spends years battling leukaemia. Unfortunately, Jimmy died in 1922, and he took his buddy Plank to the afterlife in Purgatory.

-EDDY

Was born in New York City, but his family moved to a new neighbourhood not long after in 1932, as that was the trend at the time during the great depression. As seen in the show Eddy was a schemer, and that started in his lifetime, as he needed a means of survival. However, his work led to his untimely death in 1939 when he drowned in a river while on the run from a group of kids trying to get revenge after he had swindled them.

- EDD & SARAH

They were both born in the late 1940's during the onset of the coal attacks that took form during the popular redevelopment of the post-war era. Their mother was working during this era, which meant she never had time to look after her kids. Sarah had to step up and play the role of a parent, that made her controlling and obsessive.

Edd, on the other hand, shuts everyone out and got obsessed with comic books, sci-fi and monster movies which made him very distant. They both died in a car accident while going to visit their grandparents.

-NAZZ

She was born in the hippie era of the late 60's, early 70's, growing up beautiful, she has always been known to flirt with boys and lived a carefree lifestyle. In the summer of 1979, a serial had escaped from a nearby prison broke into Nana's home, where he robs and murdered her entire family; while Nazz was raped and killed. Making her the only character to have died alongside her parents.

In her afterlife, she shuts out the memory of her entire family and lives without repercussions, which explains why her parents never demand anything from her.

-ED

Is a Jewish child born to his parents in the 80's, his parents were career-driven who spent little with their son. They left instructions scribbled on sticky notes which they left throughout the house, this which he carried to the afterlife. He was highly intellectual, but very shy and timid due to his upbringing.

He died in 1986 due to a gas leakage that occurred while he was experimenting with some new chemicals, this explosion happened directly to his face. He later died at the hospital, after several attempts by the doctors to save his life. The nature of his death explains the weird sock-like cap he always puts on, that denied us the opportunity to see his head throughout the show.

-KEVIN

Born in the 90's, in a rough neighbourhood in LA to a drunken stepfather, in order to relieve the stress caused by his father; Kevin took to bullying other kids. He died in 1999 when he tried to stand up to his father who beat him to death. In cul-de-sac, he is seen projecting his dad as a perfect father who showed him love by showering him with presents, in an effort to suppress the bad memory of left by his alcoholic stepfather from his past life.

-The Kankers Sisters

This three teenage girls who torment other kids in the cul-de-sac, as well as the Eds, are demons sent from Hell with the sole purpose of tormenting the kids. Interestingly, they remain the only characters with pink normal tongues similar to that of living people.

Eddy's Big Brother

Eddy's big brother who was mentioned several times during the show, but only made an appearance in the movie. He also possesses the weird skin tone as well as blueish grey tongue, but he is never seen in cul-de-sac. The only time we were graced with his presence was when the Eds went for a visit, then they saw him in Hell, which was the only time they were seen leaving the cul-de-sac neigbourhood - purgatory.
