Sometimes I think that following the crowd can be just "easier" for some people. It allows a person to believe that whatever may happen to them, because they were led by someone else, it's not their fault, it's the leaders fault. When in fact it truly is their own fault for following someone to their demise. It's a way for one to not have to take responsibility for their own actions. Well, that's my thought about it at least.
