Hace poco estuve en una reunión y después de pasado mucho tiempo hablando, una persona me hizo la pregunta “¿Cuáles son tus pronombres?”, y, tras pensar un poco me di cuenta de que yo era la única persona ahí que realmente se presentaba como un hombre cisgenero. Estaba rodeado de gente cuanto menos, para mí, interesante, y con miedo a ser muy imprudente les pregunté si podía hacerles preguntas sobre una cultura que me parece muy interesante, los balls.

Ballrooms are events that unite dancing, modeling, performance and lip sync. This started in New York in the early 60's and was popularized in the 80's by artists like Madonna. In the ballsroom you could find mostly young Latinos and minorities who were rejected by their families because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. For this reason, in the ballsroom communities could be divided by "houses", a place where everyone was treated as a family with a "mother" or "father" who could help them in the scene.

Los ballrooms son eventos que unen el baile, el modelaje, la perfomance y el lip sync. Esto empezó en nueva york a principios de los 60’s y se popularizó en los 80’s por artistas como Madonna. En los ballsroom se podían encontrar sobre todo a jóvenes latinos y minorías que fueron rechazadas por sus familias debido a su orientación sexual o su identidad de género. Por esto mismo, en los ballsroom se podían dividir las comunidades por “casas”, un lugar dónde todos de trataban como familia que tenían a una “madre” o un “padre” que los podía ayudar en la escena.

In the ballroom there are competitions where different members of each house face each other and are graded on different aspects such as runway, their look, attitude, voguing and even their ability to pass as a person of the opposite gender. En los ballroom se hacen competencias donde diferentes miembros de cada casa se enfrentan y se califican en diferentes aspectos como pasarela, su look, la actitud, el voguing e incluso su capacidad para pasar como una persona del género opuesto. Más específicamente, se puede hablar de “face”, “runway”, “body”, “hands”, “sex siren” y “mejor vestido”.

Arriba mencioné el voguing, pero, ¿qué es? El vogue es un estilo de baile que marca una parte importante de toda la cultura del ballroom, con movimientos exagerados pero muy hipnóticos, ya que suelen ser muy dramáticos, imitando poses de modelos de revista; esto se hace también mediante a una performance, ya que crean un personaje y narran una historia con el baile, teniendo sobre todo tres estilos que pueden ser el original, el new way (dónde se muestra más flexibilidad con inspiración a la gimnasia) y el vogue fem, dónde los movimientos son más lentos y precisos, con movimientos más fluidos y dramáticos para emular delicadeza femenina

These events have become popular in Venezuela, especially in Caracas, and it is something that really makes me happy because even though I am not a queer communicator, the fact that there are more and more events that represent the community and there are places where they can be free is great news, plus they are also seen as really interesting events from which people can learn many things about fashion, dance and performance.
