RE: "How do we win this battle?"
What an excellent post about a difficult issue. You're right, we have to listen to each other and learn to respect that each of us is unique, and that diversity is a good thing. When we stop trying to make others be who they are not, stop being afraid of what we don't understand and attempt to see from different perspectives, the world becomes a better place. Peace.
I agree... but we're also all free to disagree. We won't all see things eye to eye. The challenging thing of course is to see others endure what we would say is abuse. In this case we are looking into what is happening in Aceh and judging what is happening as being wrong. I also would prefer that it is not happening... so the question is, how do we bring about change? And how do we bring about change when we are half way around the world? And what about fixing the problems in our own country, and in our own homes, and in our own personal lives?
It's happening all around us whether we see it or not. I don't have the resources to go out and fight a battle half the way around the world. But I can start where I am, with me, with my friends, with the people I interact with on a daily basis. Then the ripple effect of that influences other people, and so on, and so on.
How can we best put our energy to use? That's the question!
All good questions, and good points. I think you're right: we do what we can where we are, and let the ripples of change grow as more people do the same.
