Many years ago I read Ibsen's verse play, Peer Gynt. I've always been a fan of folklore and of literature that teases the imagination, so it was little wonder that this play charmed me. Several scenes in the play blend modern notions of the absurd with traditional Norwegian mythology. One of these scenes takes place in the mountains with the King of the Trolls.

Peer Gynt is a person of little character, and when the trolls are done with him he has relinquished even that sorry fragment of personhood. It was this troll scene I thought of when I saw @shaka's photograph.

Every week, for the past eight weeks, @shaka has offered to the Steemit community the opportunity to participate in his unique contest, #letsmakeacollage. Contestants are invited to take his beautiful photographs and make collages out of them. No restrictions, except those prescribed by copyright.

Trolls in Legend

This impression of a troll king was rendered by Swedish illustrator, John Bauer. Bauer was best known perhaps for illustrating a book of legends and myths called Among Gnomes and Trolls. He called this picture, King of the Hill.

The caption accompanying this picture explains that, according to legend, most Norwegian mountains are made of trolls :).

The illustration below, from wikipedia, is entitled Troll Becomes a Mountain, a fate that apparently awaits trolls who remain in the open after the sun has risen.

Finally, here is an illustration from a 1936 edition of Ibsen's Peer Gynt, the play that worked on my imagination when I saw @shaka's photo. The picture shows Gynt as he meets the Troll King.

I hope you enjoyed my brief excursion into troll legend. Please check out @shaka's contest. Plenty of time left to enter. All you need is enthusiasm and imagination.

Nice idea. Good luck!
Here is some music and collage video :D

Hilarious! First thing I watched this morning, even before coffee. Thank you 😂

:D I really like all the tunes that Grieg wrote for Peer Gynt play, although this performance is not the best but college rules! Glad you like it.

Once again you've got me starting my day with an uplifting accompaniment: decided to listen to Greig as I sip my coffee. Thank you!

Perfect tunes! Once I watched Peer Gynt, as a classical russian ballet - just beautiful! Thanks for remind me on something nice, had a bad day.

Thank you for teh Story ne teh picture. It toll some time until I I realized the troll... nice effects! Wish you luck for the contest! Regards Kadna

My good friend, Kadna, thank you for stopping by. A short blog, right 😁?
Trolls are fun and this one was great fun to play with. When I showed my husband, he chuckled. That was already a reward for me.
So glad you liked my silly GIF 🐤

This makes me think that not only humans, animals and plants are animated, but also mountains and rivers can possess such and have their slow role in the great structure of Gaia. The mountain as the great silent and motionless sighted one who sees and yet does nothing. On which the creatures crawl and are not aware of it. It also reminds me of the Ents, the trees from the Lord of the Rings, which, in their meeting, reject haste. It saddens me that we live in a world where such simple things no longer occur and where we find no orientation in the complexity of our creations. But we find consolation in places that look like faces and are mountains.

Oh... and of course, you made a wonderful creation of that picture from @shaka. I like it a lot as it obviously animated me to think the thoughts I just revealed.

As I read your comment I think of how it ties into your blog on narratives. Myth, folklore, stories...they all help to inform us about our past and our culture.
I've been listening to geology tapes, and it's hard to think of the earth as something separate from life. It does have a will of its own, and it exerts that will all the time. Myth and folklore are non-science ways of explaining our place in this age-old activity.
Never watched Lord of the Rings, nor did I read it. Somehow couldn't get interested. I have seen snippets from time to time on cable TV. The scenery is magnificent. If it wasn't such a long trip and so expensive, New Zealand would be on top of my list of places to visit.

BTW: you have to watch that clip @tellurian sent me (above). It is hilarious.

Yes, absolutely agree.

Oh, it surprises me that you did not get into Lord of the Rings. The books are much different from the films. A lot of songs, poets and some creatures and features nobody would have thought of before.

But my man always says: Why do you need three thousand pages just to let some Hobbits throw a ring into a volcano? Also, couldn't they just have flew there with some eagles and do the job? LOL.
He's really unjust about Tolkien's fantasy.
It's because he didn't read it and therefore it's not a book important enough. HaHa, he can be such a snob sometimes. Of course, I dare to say as I love him dearly.

Watched the above clip and find it fascinating what one man can do alone. Quite creative and funny!

He is funny! That's the kind of literary analysis I like to read :))

Interesting information and folklore of the trolls. I love folklore too. Your added effects of the Troll King were perfect. : )

Had to control myself in writing about Peer Gynt. I've analyzed that play scene by scene in the past 😁

Thanks for liking the artistic effects. My imagination is as vivid as a child's, but unfortunately my skills are about at the same level 😂 The one thing I have on my side is a willingness to try, and work at it. 😇

I envy your imagination since I have none...a big fat zero. You do work hard at trying new things and succeed very well. Good for you! : )

You have excellent taste in literature. :-)

Know a lot more about literature than marketing :)
