Pão de queijo (cassava starch cheese puff) with hot chocolate
Hi steemians! Thanks to the new @letseat Android app I will be able to increase the frequency of my post on Steem blockchain. After introducing you the brigadeiro, a typical brazilian sweet, now it's time for another country's popular snack: the pão de queijo.
Pão de queijo literally means cheese bread in portuguese but as is not made with wheat flour some people translate that as cheese roll, ball, bun, pop or puff. The snack is a symbol for the Minas Gerais State cuisine, adopted all over Brazil. The main ingredients of the recipe are cheese and cassava (also called tapioca, manioc or yuca) starch or flour. Yes, like brigadeiro, it is gluten free too :-)
Maybe the use of cassava (that in Brazil is called mandioca, macaxeira or aipim according the region) is the most influential heritage of the indigenous people. The roots from this native plant (including poisonous species) is still eaten and prepared in different ways, as flours, shredded, sliced, fried, cooked, stewed, roast, grilled, etc.
Well, history aside and back to the review, I think this pão de queijo is special, with a pronounced cheese flavor and a crusty shell. The coffee shop at the St Marche supermarket has displayed other kind of snacks like quiches so I ordered a hot chocolate and brought the pão de queijos I pick from the bakery section. The spot is open until 10 PM, good for an after work and before going home buffer pause :-)
Thanks and good luck again!
