The Merritt Canteen is a drive-in style restaurant that opened in 1942 in Bridgeport, CT. It started as a small hot dog stand and has now become a renowned American eating establishment that was featured on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives" TV show.
The Merritt Canteen is a very reasonable price for some deliciously greasy food. Although you order at a counter, the customer service is very impressive.
One of the most popular things to get at the Merritt Canteen is the chili topping. It's very spicy and full of flavor. As you can see below, I added some chili to a bacon cheeseburger with the works. You can add chili to a hotdog, an egg sandwich, french fries and more. Their burgers are delicious, served on a slightly toasted bun topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard.
Another great thing to get at the Merritt Canteen is the Fried Mac & Cheese bites. These little fried triangles are stuffed with cheesy mac and are great dipped in ketchup or placed inside of a sandwich.
Not all of the food at the Merritt Canteen is fried or greasy. Below is a Grilled Chicken Ceasar Salad with added bacon, tomatoes and onions. It's a great healthy alternative to the burgers and hot dogs on the menu.
Overall, The Merritt Canteen is a great place to stop for a quick lunch if you're in the area. They constantly have new specials on the menu and they make some good, fast food.

That looks like an awesome burger. There is a place down by Detroit, MI that I used to get a burger similar to that at. It is called Pete's and it has been around for a long time. It is really just a hole in the wall type place, but many famous people have eaten there. Thanks for sharing this great post!
