Schwammspinner ■ Gypsy moth

Lymantria dispar (Linnaeus, 1758)

Dieser Nachtfalter hat in Deutschland für viel aufsehen gesorgt. In der Gemeinde Gunzenhausen in Mittelfranken, haben sich die Raupen dermaßen vermehrt, dass sie massenhaft Häuser und Gärten befallen haben. Die umliegenden Wälder und auch die Gärten wurden kahl gefressen. Für die Anwohner sicher eine sehr belastende Situation die bis an die Grenze des Erträglichen führte. In den unterschiedlichsten Medien gab es zahlreiche Berichte und Reportagen zu dieser Massenvermehrung. Auch bei uns in Unterfranken habe ich Raupen zahlreich entdeckt. Für mich währe es interessant zu wissen, durch welchen Umstand solch eine Massenvermehrung ausgelöst wird. Es gibt Vermutungen, dass klimatische Veränderungen sich positiv auf diese Art auswirkt. Dies Phänomenon nur auf das veränderte Klima zu scheiben, ist wohl zu einfach gedacht. Ich glaube, dass es noch weitere Faktoren gibt. Darüber lässt sich jedoch nur spekulieren.

This moths has caused a lot of sensation in Germany. In the community of Gunzenhausen in Middle Franconia, the caterpillars have increased so much that they have attacked houses and gardens on a massive scale. The surrounding forests and gardens were eaten bare. For the local residents this was certainly a very stressful situation that took them to the limit of what was bearable. In the most different media there were numerous reports and documentations to this mass increase. Also with us in Lower Franconia I discovered caterpillars numerously. For me it would be interesting to know, by which circumstance such a mass increase is released. There are assumptions that climatic changes have a positive effect on this species. To discard this phenomenon only on the changed climate is probably too simple. I believe that there are other factors. But we can only speculate about that.

Sehr schön kann man die gekämmten Fühler des Männchens erkennen. Mit diesen Antennen kann es ein Weibchen aus großer Entfernung wahrnehmen. Das Weibchen sondert ein Sekret ab welches die Männchen mit ihren Antennen erfassen können. So kann ein Männchen gezielt ein Weibchen anfliegen um es zu befruchten.

The combed antennae of the male can be seen very beautifully. With these antennas a female can perceive it from a great distance. The female secrets a secretion which the males can pick up with their antennas. So a male can specifically fly to a female to fertilise it.

Das Weibchen legt seine Eier in Form eines Schwamm an Laubbäume ab. Das Gelege mit bis zu 1000 Eier wird mit Afterwolle getarnt. Nach dem Schlüpfen krabbeln die Raupen in die Krone des Baumes um sich von jungen Blattaustrieben zu ernähren. Bei Massenvermehrungen wie diesem Jahr können ganze Bäume und Wälder kahl gefressen werden. Der Falter gilt in der Forstwirtschaft als Schädling. In der Vergangenheit hatte der Schwammspinner als Schädling allerdings keine Bedeutung. Erst nach 1990 konnten eine erhöhte Präsenz dieser Art festgestellt werden. Einen Höhepunkt der Population bildeten die Jahre 2018 und 2019. Es bleibt spannend, wie sich diese Art in den kommenden Jahren entwickelt.

The female lays her eggs in the form of a sponge on deciduous trees. The clutch with up to 1000 eggs is camouflaged with anus wool. After hatching, the caterpillars crawl into the crown of the tree to feed on young leaf shoots. With mass reproductions like this year whole trees and forests can be eaten bare. The butterfly is considered a pest in forestry. In the past, however, the gypsy moth had no significance as a pest. Only after 1990 could an increased presence of this species be detected. The years 2018 and 2019 were the highlights of the population. It remains exciting how this species will develop in the coming years._
