Painters - 04 - Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

Leonardo da Vinci the great painter of the High Renaissance was born in 1452 in the village Vinci in Tuscany, Italy. His father was a notary. He first worked as an apprentice to the sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio. From 1482 he was employed at the court of Duke of Milan. Being not only an artist, he possessed great skills and knowledge in many areas such as scientific investigations, engineering, architecture and designing.

By the 1470 he developed his characteristic style of painting figures who are seen rapt in Melancholy, and the best example is ‘Mona Lisa’.

In 1482 he moved to Milan where he worked on an altarpiece ‘The Virgin of the Rocks’. He painted the ‘Last Supper’ in 1498, on the walls of Santa Maria Della Grazie Milan, using a new mural technique.

From 1500-1506 he created his finest easel paintings, including the enigmatic ‘Mona Lisa’.

Few of his completed paintings survive, but those that remain show his remarkable talent.

Leonardo pioneered in many new artistic techniques that were later copied and developed by his contemporaries. One such technique was ‘Sfumato’ meaning to give the appearance of imperceptible changes in gradation of light, so that harsh outlines took on a softened appearance. This technique was employed in of ‘Mona Lisa’ the most famous painting in the history Western art.

In this final years his main area of interest lay in natural sciences, and many of his workbooks show intricate scientific and anatomical diagrams. His 19 notebooks contain detailed scientific drawings including plans for a helicopter like machine, a tank, and a submarine.

Leonardo da Vinci passed away in1519.

‘Virgin of the Rocks’, ‘Child and St Anne’, ‘The Last Supper’ and ‘Mona Lisa’ are among the best of his creations.
