Also known as Vasil Ivanov Kunchev
Born on July 6, 1837 Karlovo, Bulgaria

Vasil Levski, with the name of Vasil Ivanov Kunchev (born 6 July 1837 Karlovo, Rumelia - died on 6 February 1873 near Sofia), a Bulgarian revolutionary leader in the struggle for the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman domination.
Originally a monk (1858-64), Vasil Kanchev soon devotes himself to the work of liberation of Bulgaria and for his spirit is called "Levski". Levski united the two legions of Bulgarian volunteers, organized in Serbia (1862, 1868) but disappointed by the Serbian government, decided to return to Bulgaria to organize a rebellion. He introduced a new phase in the Bulgarian national movement by transferring the revolutionary activity from abroad to the country itself.
In 1869 Levski together with Lyuben Karavelov organized a Bulgarian Central Revolutionary Committee, which established a network of agents (called apostles) in Bulgaria. In 1872, during one of his secret missions to Bulgaria, Levsky was captured by the Turks and later hanged.
