Learn With Steem || Are you waiting for things to get serious and life threatening? || Maintaining your Oral Health...|| Club 100
Everyday, I diagnose patients with irreversible pulpitis, squamous cell carcinoma, mouth cancer and various other life threatening conditions. To keep it easy for you, Pulpitis refers to a condition im which your pulp of the tooth gets inflammed (swollen) the pulp is surrounded by a rich Network of blood vessels, nerves and tissues, this causes excruciating pain to the person experiencing it. You can't have food, you can't drink water, have tea, eat ice cream or basically you're deprived of all the things in this world. The solution for this condition is getting your Root Canal Treatment or worse, extraction of the affected tooth. But wait, there's more to it, the pain can radiate, and the condition can be extended to the neighboring teeth as well which worsens the condition.
Oral cancer is a very common finding in my patients as well and specially in underdeveloped countries like Pakistan, it is very common. The main reason, one may ask? Lack of awareness and lack of resources. I am tired of witnessing patients going through the worst time of their lives just because they didn't know how to maintain their oral hygiene or maybe because they didn't have the basic resources of getting themselves treated.
Where I work, we have a no discriminatory policy, where we treat you equally, without any differences. We'll give you the best advices and the best treatment. I'm stepping up a bit and will be spreading awareness and safety measures that a person should take to maintain his/her oral hygiene. Maybe I'll be able to help a couple of people under the #learnwithsteem category.
HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR ORAL HYGIENE?
I dont care if anyone followe my advices or not but when I took the oath on my first day in the medical field, I pledged to serve the mankind no matter what. I swore to guide and treat and look after all my patients no matter what. So, if you see me posting here, time to time, dictating the importance of maintaining your oral hygiene, please understand, I'm doing this for your own good. In this post, I'll guide you properly on how to take care of your oral cavity (mouth) and what you should avoid to end up like this:
Let's begin with the most basic of things. The first step in maintaining your oral health. The step that everyone in the world should follow.
Brushing your teeth
This is the most integral part of keeping your oral cavity healthy. A person who doesn't brush, doesn't really care about his/her well-being. Through brushing you don't even maintain your oral hygiene, infact you're keeping your whole body intact. The whole body is connected, if one part of it gets sick, the body gets affected.
You should be brushing your teeth twice a day. Once in the morning and once before sleeping. But, do remember, excessive brushing can cause you harm as well. I diagnose patients with complete erosion on their teeth with no history of bad oral hygiene or anything of that sort. Then what's the issue? The issue is excessive brushing and hard bristles. It's a very important point to keep in mind.
There are multiple methods of brushing for both kids and adults. I'll be posting both of them so that you can have a clear idea of how to brush your teeth properly.
For Adults:

DO NOT smoke, have beetle nuts etc:
Please please, stop while you can. Stop smoking, using beetle nuts, snuffs and other various drugs that are usually consumed by people all over the world. I can understand that you might be addicted to smoking, consuming beetle nuts and things which lie under this category, but please if you can, stop immediately. Even if you can't stop it completely, please limit your faily consumption.
Everyday, in the OPD, I diagnose patients with oral cancer and all the patients have the history of smoking and other drugs. People don't usually stop until and unless they are shown the pictures of other people with bad condition. So here I am posting a couple of cases that were presented to me in severe conditions.
These cases are a perfect example of regular consumption of drugs. Even if you're not worried about your oral health, then please consider your aesthetics. Do you think people will not judge you if your teeth look like this?
Avoid eating excessive sweets
Seen most commonly in children having a bad habit of consuming too much chocolates and candies. I know you can't stop your kids from having candies, it'd be unfair to them but atleast you can limit them. Read this carefully, I'm about to give you an advice that will help you in the long-term for maintaining your kids' oral hygiene:
Even if you can't limit your kids chocolate eating habits, what you can do is to limit the time in which these Chocolates are consumed. For example if they eat an average of four chocolates per day at four different times, force them to cut off this habit and have two chocolates in a single serving. By doing this, you'll be able to limit the usage.
You might be wondering how is this going to help? You see when you're constantly having sweets, your saliva, which has natural antibacterial activity, will have a lot of workload. But if you only eat chocolates at a particular time, your saliva will be able to wash off the bacterial accumulation(if any)
Limiting your sweets consumption is a very important practice that everyone should be following. Especially at night. Never consume sweets at night or you might end up like this:
This is a case of caries on the posterior tooth. You see, how the tooth is decayed? It's a slow and gradual process which increases over time. If you don't give enough attention to your oral hygiene and your sweet consumption, you have a high chance of having pulpitis which might end up in you getting root canal treatment which is an expensive procedure. I mean, then you don't deserve to complain that dentists charge a lot.
I am here, guiding you all the precautions that you all can take to avoid visiting the dentists for expensive procedures. I promise you, if you follow all the things that I mentioned above, you'll notice a significant change in your oral cavity.
CONCLUSION
